Workshop “Why is UEH emerging as a hub attracting international research funds?”

The workshop “Why is UEH emerging as a hub attracting international research funds?” is organized with the purpose of sharing experiences and providing in-depth insights into how international funders make their decisions. It will facilitate discussions on the key factors, challenges, and opportunities influencing funding decisions, and provide practical guidance for researchers on selecting suitable funding sources and tailoring research proposals to funders’ priorities. Furthermore, the workshop emphasizes strengthening UEH’s research capacity and fostering effective, well-rounded research teams that can attract both international funders and global research partners.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

- Discuss and understand the key factors, challenges, and opportunities that shape international research funding decisions.
- Apply practical skills to analyze calls for proposals, identify eligibility, evaluation criteria, and thematic priorities, and align proposals with funders’ expectations.
- Strengthen research capacity by developing competitive concept notes and forming effective, collaborative research teams that enhance UEH’s global engagement.

Keynote speaker

Dr. Chau Duong (Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance, Programme Leader for the MSc Professional Accounting, University of East London (The United Kingdom)

Chau is a qualified accountant (with CIMA and AICPA), started his career as an auditor for Ernst & Young, then moved into academia working for UEH from 2004 to 2008 as a lecturer. At the moment, Chau is a Senior Lecturer, Programme Director and Member of the University Academic Board at the University of East London. He is also a regular speaker and adjunct professor at multiple world-class universities. Having worked at strategic level at multiple organizations across the world for more than ten years, Chau has qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI). Chau is a recognized academic, having obtained Senior Fellow status with Advance HE (SFHEA) and is serving as a board member of the CMBE CPD Review Board of the Chartered Association of Business School (CABS), supporting the voice of the UK's business and management education sector at the strategic level. Chau has taught across a wide range of subjects in business management, finance and accounting to students at all levels in the UK and beyond, including PhD programmes, MBAs and executive education courses. Chau has regularly published on internationally excellent journals and presented at world-leading conferences in business, finance and accounting. Chau has a PhD Business and Management (Accounting major), MBA, MSc Finance and Investment, PG Certification in Higher Education, BA Accounting and BA English Linguistics and Literature. He is a proud Vietnamese alumnus of the Chevening and Shell Centenary Scholarship Funds. In recent years, Chau is developing his keen interest in supporting the higher education sector in Vietnam, especially in the accounting and finance streams connecting universities with the world of practitioners, which has started channelling some sizable international funds to Vietnam.
