The first part introduces the basic concepts of microeconomics and how the market economy works. Specifically, this section will cover supply, demand, market equilibrium, market analysis, and the elasticity of supply and demand. Next, we will study the behavior of market participants in relation to consumer choices and producers' production decisions in order to maximize their benefits from participating in the market. market. In addition, we also learn about the impact of policy on the welfare of the economy when the government intervenes in the market. These are concepts and tools frequently used in economic research as well as policy analysis. In summary, the purpose of this section is to introduce students to understand the operation of the market economy and analyze the benefits/welfare that the market economy brings to the participants.
The second part of the course looks at government decision making in the public sector as a trade-off between efficiency and equity; common market failures (monopolies, asymmetric information, externalities, public goods) and government solutions to make markets more efficient and fairer.
