Today rapid urbanization is a critical issue with skyrocketing urban population around the world. More than 50 percent of world population lives in the city today and there is an estimation that nearly 70 percent will do in urban area by 2050, which equates to more than six billion people. Facing to a variety of urban problems on the urbanization, Smart City strategies and proposals try to optimize existing urban infrastructure, network, and communities through the innovative technologies and advanced planning thinking. Cities employing optimization techniques have reported improvements in efficiency of energy use, transportation, housing, culture, public safety, and so forth. Furthermore, Smart Cities are places where the community is engaged with decision makers and empowered to solve problems in their neighborhoods. Smart Cities should result in healthier environment, safer neighborhoods, and more efficient operations. This course underlines Smart Cities by focusing on disruptive innovations in technology, design, planning, and policies that can bring dramatic improvements in urban livability and sustainability.
