Health policy plays an important role in the optimal use of limited resources (people, time, machinery and equipment, knowledge) to achieve health goals. Besides medicine, a good health policy needs to be built on the analysis of economics, the scientific field dedicated to the issue of optimal use of finite resources. This course will focus on analyzing typical health policies from an economic perspective.

Specifically, the course will focus on four groups of health policy to which economic analysis has a direct contribution: (1) health care financing, (2) health care provision, (3) health behaviors, và (4) economic valuation of health care programs. The Vietnamese health system will be a key example in this course.

Analyzing a health policy from an economic perspective requires two main knowledge bases:1) economic concepts and principles and (2) data collection and data analyses. Learners have been gained with these two blocks of knowledge in the previous two courses, Microeconomics for health sector and Statistical methods for health sector. This course will help learners combine the above two blocks of knowledge to perform economic analysis of health policies.
