The course aims to introduce and discuss the two characteristics (eco and smart) that both contemporary cities and architecture need to have. Cities and architecture have to be considered as part of the ecosystems where they are situated. Firstly, smart in this context refers to living, transporting, adapting, manipulating, and managing with a deep understanding of ecosystems. Secondly, the process of building and developing cities and architecture needs to integrate ideas, methods, and advanced technologies to aim for a more comprehensive, sustainable, and global system. In this course, students will explore and discuss concepts, some of these date back to the 20th century, while others represent more innovative technological models from this century. The idea is to draw a large image of what the city and architecture should be in contemporary times and the future. At the end of the course, students will choose one of the concepts to develop further as a final paper.
