This module provides a general introduction to the fundamental economic theories in the banking area. These theories will help students explain banks’ strategic decisions and operations. Specifically, the course will offer knowledge on banks’ role, why banks are needed, whether banks are special organizations or not; The asymmetric information problem in banking activities, especially in lending, and its harmful effects as well as ways to address them; The banking crisis will be also discussed; Theories on banking regulations and what role those regulations play are also discussed; Lastly, the bank’s structure and banking relationship are vital topics that will be discussed in the course as well.
