6. Brief Description of Course Content:

The course provides students with methodological thinking and research design on economic, statistical, business, and financial topics. The main skill in research design that economics PhD students require is the ability to identify a research problem and evaluate interventions on how to solve it in a way that contributes new knowledge and new contributions.

The research design course will help students identify, construct and develop a research problem, design a research framework to solve that problem and transform this problem into a research question. Based on the research framework and the basis of foundation theories and relevant previous studies, the PhD student will be able to choose an appropriate research method, how to collect and analyze data, conduct qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods to answer the research questions, and finalize the research reports.

This course is presented mainly using the case study approach. The lecturer will introduce and suggest case studies, readings, and research papers associated with a research design process according to international practices for PhD students to be analyzed and evaluated. Through case study analysis, PhD students will be able to grasp the main content of each subject.

Based on existing research ideas, PhD students have to apply the ideas to all topics of the course with each step in the research process such as developing research problems, finding research gaps, designing research framework, selecting research methods, data sampling or data collection according to qualitative or quantitative or mixed approach, synthesize into a research proposal. By doing so, PhD Students create added value to the quality of the existing research proposal that the PhD student is pursuing.
