5. Course Objectives:
Provides students with a solid foundation in design through exposure to and practice of fundamental principles and theories applicable to all art forms. Students will be equipped with a design language that includes elements such as form, balance, structure, rhythm and harmony. The course also focuses on developing design thinking, helping students learn to think like a designer and evaluate design options. This is a foundational subject, paving the way for more advanced design subjects in the program.
6. Brief Description of Course Content:
This course introduces the design principles and practices common to most design professions, to give students a foundation understanding of design using basic principles and theory applicable to all forms of art. Students will learn the language of design: form, balance, structure, rhythm, and harmony are studied in black and white and in color. Through essential hands-on design exercises, Studio 1 focuses on the development of the beginning student’s thinking methodology such as how to think like a designer, and how to judge between good and bad design execution. This course lays the foundation for a more advanced design course. This course is related to the following courses: UX & UI, Studio 3; Graphic Design, Studio 4: Media Production, Seminar 4: Design Thinking, New Tech in Communication, Project 4: Website Design and Development, Media Content Creation.
