5. Course Objectives:

This course provides students with essential reading skills necessary for engaging in independent reading activities within the course. It enables them to effectively comprehend a variety of reading texts encompassing different topics relevant to both daily life and professional endeavors. Through this course, students can refine their reading strategies, thereby enhancing their vocabulary acquisition, comprehension abilities, and fostering critical thinking in academic reading tasks. The course encompasses a range of specific strategies designed to empower students in their reading journey. These strategies include previewing and predicting content, utilizing dictionaries for word comprehension, employing highlighting and annotating techniques, making informed inferences, grasping comparisons and contrasts, deducing new word meanings from contextual clues, engaging in both gist and detailed reading, and mastering the skill of speed reading through the utilization of the "keyword" technique.

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

This module equips students with reading skills required to perform reading activities in the course independently and comprehend reading texts on different topics related to daily life and work. Students are able to practise reading strategies to improve their lexical resources and reading skill as well as develop their critical thinking in academic reading activities. Specific strategies include guessing the meaning of new words through various contexts, reading for gist and details and the skill of speed reading by using the “keyword’’ technique.
