5. Course Objectives:

This course helps students gain a solid understanding of the structure, purpose, and linguistic features of four key academic essay types: cause-effect, opinion, persuasive, and summary essays. It also introduces essential components of effective writing, such as constructing thesis statements, presenting supporting arguments, and maintaining coherence and cohesion throughout an essay. In addition to developing knowledge, the course helps students enhance their ability to write well-organized and coherent essays in the four aforementioned genres at an upper-intermediate level. Students will also strengthen their collaboration skills through group discussions and cooperative activities, thereby supporting their learning process and improving their writing skills. In terms of attitude, the course aims to foster critical thinking and a spirit of curiosity in students throughout the writing process. It encourages students to value peer collaboration, inquiry-based learning, and the acceptance of constructive feedback as essential elements in developing their academic writing competence.

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

With this course (Upper-intermediate Writing), students will increase their knowledge about how to write four types of essays, which are cause-effects, opinions, persuasive, and summarizing essays. More importantly, they will apply note-taking skills and develop critical thinking strategies for effective essay writing in particular, and when accessing different sources of information for later research and studying in general. Finally, students will be involved in various learning activities like discussions, exploration and inquiry and cooperative group work to make their learning experience exciting and valuable.
