5. Course Objectives:

This module equips English majors with fundamental knowledge of phonetics and phonology, encompassing the articulatory mechanisms of the English vowel and consonant systems, as well as other suprasegmental features in phonology such as syllables, stress (word and sentence stress), and intonation. Furthermore, students are introduced to the phonological rules employed by native speakers during spoken communication. From this foundation, students can apply these insights to refine and enhance their pronunciation skills in particular and oral communication skills in general.

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

The course consists of 9 chapters providing students with the foundation in Phonetics and Phonology such as consonants/vowels, dipthongs/tripthongs, phonemes/allophones, phonological rules, syllables, stress/ tone/ pitch and intonation. Besides, some consolidations and practices are also included.
