5. Course Objectives:
This course offers students a concise introduction to various interpreting modalities, such as consecutive interpreting, sight translation, and simultaneous interpreting. Participants will also develop the essential qualities of a skilled interpreter and have opportunities to practice these techniques across a range of topics, including economics, business, social issues, politics, culture, diplomacy, education, healthcare, and more. To ensure students have access to the most current and relevant information, the course incorporates materials sourced from newspapers, magazines, and news broadcasts.
6. Brief Description of Course Content:
This module provides students with fundamental knowledge and skills related to interpretation in business contexts such as principles of interpreting; the important strategies and techniques required for successful interpreting; interpreting practice in different contexts and exploration various challenges facing interpreters to create awareness of the interdisciplinary nature of interpreting. It focusses on enhancing students’ abilities in sequential and simultaneous interpreting in formal conference settings as well as public service interpreting. Over the module, students will gain proficiency in note-taking techniques for dialogue and consecutive interpreting as well as the complex multitasking abilities necessary for public service, consecutive, and booth-based simultaneous interpreting in the profession.
