5. Course Objectives:

This course is designed to equip students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to design and conduct research in the field of applied linguistics, particularly for those majoring in English. It introduces core research approaches and methodologies employed in investigating research topics within applied linguistics. Students will learn to formulate research plans, collaborate with peers to execute a small-scale research project, and interpret research findings. As part of the learning process, students will engage with exemplary research articles in applied linguistics prior to undertaking their own research endeavors.

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

This module aims to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills required to design and carry out independent research in the area of applied linguistics and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). It introduces the key research approaches and a variety of research methods used in investigating language teaching and learning. It will take a step-by-step approach through the process, from getting to know the key concepts involved in applied linguistics research, to the design, carrying out a research project, and interpreting the research findings. It also introduces students to exemplary research articles in this area.
