5. Course Objectives:

The course is designed to help students achieve the following objectives: (1) Provide students with foundational knowledge of scientific research: Students will gain a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts, principles, and processes involved in conducting scientific research, from identifying research problems, developing research proposals, conducting literature reviews, building research models and developing research hypotheses, to analyzing different types of data and presenting research findings in a scientific, logical, and systematic manner; (2) Develop practical research skills: Students will be trained to identify research problems, collect and write relevant literature reviews to support problem solving, collect and analyze data, whether qualitative, quantitative, or both, and present research findings through discussions, practical exercises, and group work. They will also develop communication skills, critical thinking, and creativity to address research problems effectively; (3) Foster autonomy and responsibility in research: Students will be guided to independently search for academic resources, evaluate research quality, and stay updated with emerging trends. They will also develop critical thinking and creativity in proposing scientifically sound and practical solutions. In particular, students will recognize ethical and social issues throughout the research process, including the potential impacts of research on businesses, society, and research participants, as well as the importance of honesty and integrity in conducting and reporting research.

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

The course provides students with knowledge of various research methods used in business, enabling them to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each method, as well as the research approaches employed to address research questions based on underlying philosophical assumptions. The course is organized through a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on research projects, integrated with activities such as presenting research findings, engaging in discussions and critiques, and receiving continuous feedback and evaluation from the lecturer. Specifically, the course structure consists of five parts:

  • Part 1 introduces fundamental concepts and key terminology in research, provides an overview of the research process, guidance on writing a research proposal, and discusses ethical issues in conducting research.
  • Part 2 equips learners with knowledge and practical experience in the initial stages of the research process, including: (1) identifying research problems, objectives, and research questions; (2) conducting a systematic literature review; and (3) understanding and applying different philosophical worldviews, which form the basis for selecting research approaches, research methodologies, and research designs.
  • Part 3 provides learners with knowledge and practice on (1) sampling methods and quantitative data collection; (2) measurement of quantitative research variables; and (3) quantitative data analysis.
  • Part 4 provides learners with knowledge and practice on (1) qualitative research design; (2) sampling methods and qualitative data collection; and (3) qualitative data analysis.
  • Part 5 provides learners with knowledge and practice on interpreting and reporting research results.
