The course "History of architecture and urbanism" introduces general knowledge about the history of World Architecture, Urbanism, and the built environment from pre-history to the present; in addition to examining the formal properties of global architecture, this course explores buildings and cities in their cultural, social, political, and religious contexts with thematical reflections towards the urban context of Ho Chi Minh City. The students will learn about the important processes that shape our urban past, present and futures, including urbanization and the historical development of cities. These processes form an epistemic context upon which the study of urban planning will be introduced. The course will discuss about the relevance of urban planning as part of urban governance, including its scope of practice, the agencies and institutions involved in the planning process in different cities, and in Ho Chi Minh City.
