5. Course Objectives:

This course aims to train students on how to start a design project through a good analysis of urban and landscape structures. Students will all begin with the fundamentals of mapping topography and hydrological systems as land forms. Then each group of students will be assigned one mapping theme to really learn how to extract the essential elements of the given site to create interpretive maps as a base for the future design assignment.

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

In this course, students will learn how to do mapping and exploit it as a powerful tool for urban analysis. The mapping here is not tracing. It is more about extracting the essential existing elements and interpreting them to tell a story about places and cities. To do that, it requires deep fieldwork to see, feel, talk, and speculate about the places. The results of the speculations will be the basis for moving forward with deeper research or designs.
