5. Course Objectives:

The course Applied Phonology provides English Language students with fundamental knowledge of English phonetics and phonology and guides them in applying this knowledge in practice. Beginning with specialized terminology related to the branches of phonetics and phonology within linguistics and the role of phonetics–phonology in spoken communication and pronunciation skills in particular, the course enables students to engage with the essential concepts of the field. The knowledge acquired in this course will serve as a foundation for pronunciation practice and the development of listening and speaking skills, thereby helping students to improve their English pronunciation and oral communication competence.

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

The course Applied Phonology is designed to enable students of English Language Studies to explore and apply phonological rules in the development of pronunciation and spoken communication skills. Accordingly, the course is divided into two main parts. The first part introduces core terminology in applied phonology and delivers fundamental knowledge of segmental features, including consonants, monophthongs, diphthongs, and triphthongs. The second part focuses on suprasegmental features such as phonemes and allophones, phonological rules, syllables, connected speech, stress, and intonation. Each lesson is accompanied by exercises to facilitate students’ better understanding and to help them apply the acquired knowledge effectively in real communicative contexts.
