6. Brief Description of Course Content:

This course provides students with an advanced foundation in English reading comprehension through four thematic units: Nutritional Science, Education, Geology, and Engineering. It focuses on developing both fundamental and higher-order reading skills, including predicting, skimming, scanning, inferring meaning from context, note-taking, and responding to texts. In addition, students will practice advanced academic reading skills such as identifying the author’s purpose, tone, and attitude; recognizing viewpoints and biases; evaluating arguments for validity and logic; analyzing cause-and-effect relationships; and interpreting statistical data. Group discussions and short presentations further enhance students’ ability to summarize, synthesize, and critically respond to readings, thus preparing them for higher-level academic and professional English courses.
