5. Course Objectives:

This course aims to enhance students’ mastery of English grammar with a clear focus on improving their academic writing competence. Specifically, it seeks to deepen students’ understanding of key grammatical structures, including sentence components, clause formation, and complex sentence construction, while enabling them to apply this knowledge effectively beyond the sentence level. The course also equips students with essential academic writing techniques such as hedging, boosting, positioning, and the appropriate use of collocations and corpus-based language resources. By the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate improved grammatical accuracy and rhetorical sophistication in producing a variety of academic genres, including internship reports, graduation theses, and other scholarly or professional texts, thereby preparing them for both academic and workplace communication demands.

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

This course enhances and further develops students’ knowledge of English grammar with the ultimate goal of improving their academic writing skills.  It reinforces and deepens students’ knowledge of key components of English sentences, clauses and sentences formation, and of writing beyond sentence level. Besides, it provides students with crucial techniques in academic writing, such as: hedging, boosting, positioning, and using collocation and corpus. Through this course, students’ knowledge of both English grammar and academic writing are expected to be improved. This enables students to have serviceable knowledge to write different genres for their graduation (e.g., internship report, graduation thesis) and for their future work or further studies.
