Environmental economics is the study of environmental degradation and natural resource depletion problems from the economic perspective. The course is designed to enable students to understand the linkages between economic activities and the environment and vice versa. It discusses the theories and the tools that can be used to understand and measure these relationships so that appropriate decisions on how best to manage the environment and the natural resources can be identified. The course discusses selected important topics in environmental economics. These topics focus on three main areas: (1) Linkages between economic activities and the environment, (2) Economic instruments for pollution control, and (3) Economic valuation of environmental goods and services.
