5. Course Objectives:

Individuals, firms and governments need to make financial decisions such as saving, investment, and risk management. Those decisions are implemented in the financial system with variety of institutions, instruments and markets. This course introduces students to the foundational structure and operations of a financial system. The course provides students with the basic knowledge in finance-money to form the background for further related studies; and equips students with the tools they need to make their own financial decisions with greater skill and confidence.

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

This course is an introduction to finance and money. It will provide basic knowledge and skills applicable to personal and managerial finance. The course starts with an overview of financial system, introduces to concepts of finance and money. Then the course deals with interest rates and time value of money. The first part addresses public finance and corporate finance. The second part discusses financial institutions and markets. The third part presents the international financial system, central bank and monetary policy. The last part focus on personal finance. The context of sustainable development is introduced and discuss throughout the course.
