5. Course Objectives:

International Political Economy aims to provide students with a fundamental and systematic body of knowledge on the theories, perspectives, and laws governing political economy in the context of globalization. Through this course, students gain an understanding of the factors shaping the dynamics of the global economy and the economic relations among nations. The course enables students to analyze and evaluate the roles of international political–economic actors, such as international economic and financial organizations and multinational corporations, as well as to identify and assess the impacts of globalization on developed and developing countries. On this basis, the course contributes to the development of critical thinking and analytical skills in examining contemporary international political–economic issues. It helps students recognize major trends in the global economy and understand Viet Nam’s role and position in the context of international economic integration. At the same time, the course fosters awareness of national and global responsibilities in addressing economic, social, and environmental challenges.

Course Contents

  • Concepts, scope, and objects of study of International Political Economy.
  • Major schools of thought in International Political Economy: liberalism, protectionism, and Marxism.
  • Roles, functions, and operational mechanisms of international economic and financial institutions (WTO, IMF, and the World Bank); impacts of free trade and international trade agreements.
  • Globalization and its impacts on International Political Economy; the role of multinational corporations and international capital flows.
  • Economic relations between developed and developing countries; issues of global economic inequality and development models.
  • Major global political–economic issues: climate change, global security, and international migration.
  • Viet Nam’s role and position in International Political Economy and its economic development strategies in the context of globalization and international economic integration.
