Vietnam has more than 60% of its population living in the countryside and by using the percentage of urban population as an indicator for urbanization, the government believes that we will reach 40% urbanization in 2020 and 50% in 2040. As villages become towns and existing cities become more crowded with migrants, the government is faced with challenges to provide sufficient infrastructure and public services to meet with increasing demands. New condominium buildings will rise and land for parks will soon deplete. Housing prices will also increase and a portion of the population will thus struggle with higher rents. In this context, urban planning appears to be a powerful tool to tackle those problems. This course aims at providing the students with a fundamental understanding of urban planning and housing issues.
