5. Course Objectives:

Perform well academically at an international-level. Analyze and assess arguments presented in both scholarly and popular texts. Formulate coherent arguments and present evidence based on analysis of information to develop and support a position. Identify key processes and communication styles for effective communication, both in written and oral forms with other related skills in an academic setting. Communicate effectively using proper etiquette in written and oral forms in both formal and informal situations. Understand the concepts and practices needed to accomplish written assignments, projects and to deliver an effective presentation. Develop a better understanding of different learning styles and techniques necessary to work effectively as individuals or collaboratively with others. Develop a higher comprehensive understanding of the academic research process. Understand the fundamentals of using sources to support an argument as well as avoid plagiarism in writing. 10. Write academic essays using appropriate academic writing styles, citations, and bibliographies based on internationally-recognized formats (APA 7th edition).

6. Brief Description of Course Content:

This unit aims at helping university freshmen gain their awareness of the new challenges in the university environment and equipping them with certain skillset in order to actively adapt. This skillset includes two main groups namely academic writing skills and other university skills. Additionally, students will experience hands-on activities in developing their personal objectives and action plan. In terms of academic writing, students will work on developing reading, writing, and research skills that can prepare them for academic and employment success. These skills can be applied in workplace and numerous fields of business. Additionally, this unit assists students in effectively finding, reading, analyzing and referencing articles, and then writing a logical and well-structured essay. Other necessary skills are integrated in the lessons where students stand in relationship to others’ beliefs, learning to work collaboratively and productively with others, and to critically engage new ideas and practices.
