The objective of this course is to systematically provide doctoral students (NCS) with knowledge of theoretical background in the field of Banking and Finance, the ability to apply theory to experimental studies in the trend of modern research. The main content of the course presents the background theories of the banking - financial, the development trend of the financial-money market in terms of integration, the operating mechanism to ensure safety and stability, regulations of financial institutions, the impact of institutions and politics on the administration of fiscal and monetary policies. After studying this subject, NCS has the ability to independently research, identify research trends in Banking - Finance, choose research methods and research models suitable to their research ability. |
7. Banking Economics |

This module provides a general introduction to the fundamental economic theories in the banking area. These theories will help students explain banks’ strategic decisions and operations. Specifically, the course will offer knowledge on banks’ role, why banks are needed, whether banks are special organizations or not; The asymmetric information problem in banking activities, especially in lending, and its harmful effects as well as ways to address them; The banking crisis will be also discussed; Theories on banking regulations and what role those regulations play are also discussed; Lastly, the bank’s structure and banking relationship are vital topics that will be discussed in the course as well. |
8. Empirical Research in Financial Markets |

This course provides the students with theoretical foundations and an overview of recent empirical research in corporate finance and asset pricing. The topics covered may include risk and returns, asset pricing models, behavioral finance, market microstructure, corporate governance, and capital structure theory. This course will be in the form of seminars and group discussions around empirical papers with an emphasis on econometric methods for each topic. The ultimate objective is for the students to develop their own hypotheses and research ideas, resulting in a paper. After completing this course, students can be able to: (1) review and apply corporate finance and asset pricing theories, (2) be aware of the approaches that have been employed in empirical financial studies, (3) understand and develop quantitative skills regarding collecting, analyzing and interpreting financial data, and (4) discuss and communicate empirical findings. With these skills, students can conduct their research-oriented thesis. |
9. Writing for Publication in Banking and Finance |

The course covers topics such as identifying target readerships and profiling journals and other outlets, efficiently managing the writing process, effectively structuring the text, producing fluent and reader-friendly sentences and paragraphs, and revising and editing the text prior to submission and in response to reviewers' comments. Participants are expected to produce a number of short texts as homework assignments, and they receive individual feedback on these during the course. After the course, Ph.D. students will have good command of English as a working language and start to work on the research ready for publication. |
