CTD Workshop on “Technology and Design: Transforming for Sustainability”

With the aim of creating opportunities for lecturers to share and discuss information regarding technology and design, to update new tendencies and to orientate through a more realistic lens of corporates, on the afternoon of April 26th, 2022, UEH College of Technology and Design organized an online workshop with “Technology and Design: Transforming for Sustainability” Theme with the participation of guest presenters who are lecturers of UEH College of Technology and Design and representatives of Alta Media Technology Company.

Ascending the success of the CTD Workshop this February and March 2022, UEH College of Technology and Design held a new CTD Workshop in April 2022 with “Technology and Design: Transforming for Sustainability” Theme. This workshop not only received the concerns, attendances and contributions of lecturers and employees in the internal UEH College of Technology and Design but also engaged the attention and sharing of lecturers and employees of UEH-affiliated-member Colleges and Vinh Long Campus.

Delivering a speech at the workshop, Dr. Bui Quang Hung - Vice President of UEH in charge of UEH College of Technology and Design - shared: “Technology and Design are used to and affiliated with each daily essential activity. This workshop will help with understanding intensively what Design is, why Technology and Design come together, and how they contribute to our life and work and research and education in responding to the demands of society, especially their interdisciplinary integrated roles in suggesting solutions serving society.

This workshop included 2 sessions: the first session was to share the experience and viewpoints of specialists and lecturers of UEH College of Technology and Design and the representatives of Alta Media Technology Company. In the second session, after listening to the sharing of experts, lecturers and employees would contribute extensive discussions related to this field and unveil their perspectives.

In the first session, Dr. Le Khanh Duy at Institute of Smart City and Management presented the economic values of technology design through 02 typical examples of a world-leading furniture retail company - IKEA and Apple Technology Company to illustrate the economic values of the smallest technology design - the tiny details in products and layout design bringing huge impacts and competitive edges to corporates in this digital era.

In the following session, Dr. Architect To Kien shared his experience collected from his teaching job that participated in the first steps of establishing Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Through his realistic teaching experience, he showed his perspectives and the breakthroughs that SUTD had been implementing as well as discussed teaching through specific classroom model instances collected from his teaching job in SUTD (Design Thinking - one of the most outstanding and proud subjects of SUTD that all freshmen are taught). He also placed the emphasis on and assisted students to understand that Design is an extremely large scale included not only in visible designs such as arts, graphics, or fashion but also invisible designs like activities or services. In the 4.0 age, the booming of technology is always attached to the development of designs.

In addition, the representatives of Alta Media Technology Company affiliated with Alta Group - Ms. Dinh Thi Tuyet Trinh - Manager of Human Resources Alta Group and Mr. Huynh Viet Cuong - Manager of Training and Program Development - presented the projects that Alta Group conducted and applied Technology and Design. Due to that, they delivered information concerning lecturers and students which were realistic demands of corporates in terms of human resources and skills for students to intern and work in corporates in the future.

After listening to the sharing of the guest speakers and the representatives of the company, the lecturers discussed the significance of applying specializations in Mathematics - Statistics, Business, and Economics to Technology and Design. In the discussion session, Dr. Bui Quang Hung illustrated the development vision of UEH College of Technology and Design which is to emphasize Design on the basis of Technology and using human thinking to raise solutions for innovation serving our lives and society. These are challenges and prospects of UEH College of Technology and Design in orientating and evolving the training program related to Technology and Design in the future.

The CTD Workshop “Technology and Design: Transforming for Sustainability” is a program within the workshop series of UEH College of Technology and Design in 2022. This workshop provided much valuable information helping students understand better the field of Technology and Design. This received lots of sharings and contributions from the guest speakers, lecturers, and employees. In the upcoming time, UEH College of Technology and Design will organize more seminars to discuss further issues surrounding the field of Technology and Design and multidisciplinary cooperation.

With the restructuring strategies forming a sustainable and multidisciplinary university, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City is unstoppably making efforts to promote training and research activities toward multidisciplinary and dual-degree orientations bringing practical values that contribute to the development progress of socio-economics in the country as well as making the academic reputation of UEH develop strongly in the world market, within Top 100 in the Asia region in 2030.
