As cities and educational institutions continue to grow, the challenge of waste management and sustainable resource use has become one of the most critical issues of the 21st century. From the perspectives of architecture, design, urban management, and the circular economy, the concept of a Zero-Waste Campus is increasingly recognized as an innovative approach to minimizing waste, optimizing resource use, and promoting sustainable development.
To provide students with opportunities to explore interdisciplinary perspectives and learn from practical models in Southeast Asia, the Institute for Smart City and Management (ISCM), University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), in collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic (Singapore) and Thammasat Design School – Thammasat University (Thailand), is organizing the International Workshop: Sustaining Zero-Waste Environment in Singapore.
This workshop serves as an academic and international exchange platform for students in the fields of urban studies, architecture, design, environment, and management to discuss and propose innovative solutions for sustainable campus models in Southeast Asia.
WORKSHOP THEMES
- Sustainable Waste Management: Explore solutions for reducing, sorting, and processing waste within university campuses in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner.
- Circular Economy in Campus: Learn how circular economy principles can be applied to optimize resource reuse and minimize waste within the campus ecosystem.
- Green / Sustainable / Resilient Campus: Analyze campus development models that focus on resource efficiency, emission reduction, and resilience to environmental challenges.
- Interdisciplinary Design and Urban Solutions: Encourage students from different disciplines to collaborate in proposing innovative design and management solutions for a sustainable campus environment.
Participants will work together to analyze and propose design, management, and operational strategies toward sustainable campus models, while also exploring initiatives such as the UEH Green Campus model and sustainable development practices in Singapore.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
- Online Module / Orientation
Before the workshop begins, students will participate in online seminars and panel discussions featuring lecturers and experts from partner institutions. These sessions are part of the academic program and aim to provide foundational knowledge before the in-person workshop.
- Workshop in Singapore (June 8 – 11, 2026)
Day 1: Program introduction, international team formation, and site visit for the research project.
Day 2: Inter-university teams analyze the context, identify key issues, and develop initial ideas.
Day 3: Continue refining solutions and preparing presentations.
Day 4: Teams present their proposals to a panel of lecturers and experts, followed by closing activities and networking sessions.
The total workload is approximately 45 learning hours, equivalent to 3 academic credits.
