The diversity of the workforce may cause communication problems in a connected business environment. A language workshop on "Fostering effective communication in multicultural business settings" was held on September 29, 2023, to assist UEH students in developing their cross-cultural abilities to adapt to an international workplace.
As part of the monthly activities with many practical topics to help learners learn languages, UEH English Zone, in collaboration with the School of Foreign Languages, organised a workshop on "Fostering Effective Communication in Multicultural Business Settings." The event featured Mr. Andries Dreyer, an expert with over 15 years of experience in travel, tourism, and hospitality.
With a focus on communicating effectively in a multicultural business environment, Mr. Andries Dreyer presented techniques for conveying through pronunciation, emphasis, and various methods to enhance effective communication. He also emphasised the importance of showing respect for individuals from different cultural backgrounds in the workplace.
Additionally, the speaker pointed out differences in Vietnamese communication compared to other countries. For example, Vietnamese value indirect and subtle communication, including non-verbal signals like nodding and smiling, to maintain harmony in relationships. In contrast, South Africans have a more direct communication style, often speaking confidently and addressing issues directly. The speaker also mentions how culture influences how we perceive and respond to messages since cultural values, beliefs, and communication styles shape our worldview. People from different cultural backgrounds may understand and interpret the same message differently.
September's topic "Fostering Effective Communication in Multicultural Business Settings" with a joyful atmosphere, full of learning spirit, and active contributions from attendees, has left many discussions when highlighting the differences in communication among various cultures and how to navigate a multicultural environment.
UEH English Zone was founded in B2 Park, UEH Nguyen Tri Phuong, to create an English learning environment, by organizing weekly and monthly talks, board games, language workshops, music shows... in English.
