The Language Workshop: “The science of learning vocabulary": How many words do we need to know?

Have you ever wondered how many words you truly need to know to master English, or if simply cramming as many as possible into your brain is the key? The Language Workshop: “The science of learning vocabulary: principles, techniques, and tools”, organized by UEH English Zone on February 28, 2025, has unveiled the secrets to answering this intriguing question.

The event features Dr. Lê Thị Như Quỳnh from CELG-UEH Department of School of Foreign Languages, who has profound knowledge and extensive experience in the fields of Language and Education. Dr. Như Quỳnh led participants on an engaging journey into the science of vocabulary learning. By debunking common misconceptions, she highlighted the importance of focusing on what truly matters: learning for your needs, not anyone else's.

The workshop explored practical and actionable strategies to enhance vocabulary learning, offering participants valuable insights into more effective methods. Key principles were thoroughly discussed, including:

Principle 1: Choose words based on frequency and needs

Principle 2: Learn different aspects of a word, not just its meaning

Principle 3: The more repetitions, the better you remember the word

Principle 4: Increasing the quality of attention (noticing, recalling, meeting, and using words in contexts) helps you remember for longer.

A variety of useful websites and tools were introduced by Dr. Như Quỳnh to help students effortlessly practice and evaluate the frequency level of words, with a special emphasis on the Oxford dictionaries. Additionally, Dr. Như Quỳnh engaged students with hands-on exercises, encouraging them to communicate with their peers. Through these interactive discussions, students explored how to apply the discussed principles in real-life scenarios, adding a personal touch to tailor their learning experience.

The workshop wrapped up with an energetic Q&A session, during which Dr. Quỳnh emphasized the importance of retaining what you learn. While acquiring new vocabulary is essential, it’s equally important to truly understand and use them in everyday contexts - otherwise, they won’t stay with you for long. Students walked away not only equipped with practical knowledge but also brimming with the confidence to integrate these new principles into both their academic pursuits and professional endeavors.

As part of the UEH English Zone project, these monthly language workshops provide students and staff with opportunities to enhance their language and academic skills. In the coming months, UEH English Zone will expand its activities to the Nguyen Van Linh Campus, offering an even broader platform for learning and growth.
