Implementing the Experimental Method Development Program at UEH from July 19th to August 12th, 2022

With the strategy of shaping the leading position in Vietnam in conducting experimental research and effectively operating the laboratory, from July 19th to August 12th, 2022, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) will implement the Experimental Methods Development program at the HCMC campus and Vinh Long Campus.

At the global level, the experimental method has been widely used in economics, business, and management such as marketing, finance, economics, public policy, and law. This method was first recognized through the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics awarded to Vernon Smith. In 2019, the second experimental Nobel Prize in economics was awarded to Esther Duflo, Abhijit Banerjee, and Michael Kremer. The experimental method is seen as an alternative to econometric regression. Economics labs have been built and implemented at many institutions such as MIT (Poverty Action Lab), York University, University of California at San Diego, University of Arizona, and University of Melbourne, …

In Vietnam, the experimental method has been applied in increasing numbers of research since the early 2010s. The subject of experimental economics has been taught in some universities. However, almost no university or research institute has established an economic laboratory, except for a small one at UEH. This method has not been applied much in other fields listed as marketing, finance, banking, business, administration, and law.

In the strategy of becoming a multidisciplinary and sustainable, research-oriented university, UEH has set development goals for experimental methods at the main campus and Vinh Long Campus in the future including:

Diversifying analytical tools by mastering new methods and operating laboratories;

The experimental method will be applied in different research areas at UEH, including marketing, management, economics, law, public policy, finance, banking, and other interdisciplinary studies;

Developing experimental method subjects and incorporating them into the curriculum.

In order to gradually realize the set goals, from July 18th to August 16th, 2022, UEH will implement the Experimental Method Development program at the Ho Chi Minh City campus and Vinh Long Campus with the cooperation accompanied by Professor John Hey - York University (United Kingdom) to work full-time. Prof. John Hey is a professor in economics and statistics and a leading researcher in the field of theoretical research in experimental economics with numerous publications and books. In the one-month program of collaborating with UEH, Prof. John Hey will conduct many meaningful contribution activities, notably throughout the companionship to support the development of Experimental Methods at UEH. The two core arrays of this sequence of activities are:

(i) Strategic consulting for effective laboratory design and operation;

(ii) Fostering experimental research capacity for UEH staff.

Prof. John Hey - York University (United Kingdom) - will come to work full-time at UEH for one month during the program

The schedule of Prof. John Hey at UEH is as follows:

01 - 02 sessions of experience sharing in laboratory establishment and operation;
10 - 12 lectures on experimental methods for lecturers and researchers of UEH. The main purpose of these lectures is to introduce the method and to inspire researchers to use it in future research;
Interacting with lecturers and fellows who are planning to use experimental methods;
Talking to JABES journal about the future collaboration process;
Some field trip activities (scheduled).

After a journey of nearly 46 years of construction and development, UEH has entered a new stage of development with the strategy of becoming a multidisciplinary and sustainable university with a high reputation in Vietnam in terms of training, researching, consulting, and criticizing economic, business, law policies and business information systems. New opportunities and challenges continue to motivate the entire UEHers to work, study, and research for the development of UEH and the development of scientific knowledge, towards creating a more effective and practical resonance value for society.
