During two days November 3-4, 2023, UEH College of Economics, Law and Government (UEH–CELG) and EfD - Vietnam organized an in-depth workshop on Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) with the participation of 32 researchers from many universities and research institutes.

Workshop on Randomized Control Trials (RCTs)

Within the framework of the workshop, Dr. Yonas Alem - Academic Director of the Environment for Development Initiative (EfD), had a 2-day discussion with 32 researchers from various institutes about Randomized Control Trials methods (RCTs). The workshop provided a vibrant and exciting learning experience as participants delved into the complexities of these methods together.

Throughout the two days of the workshop, participating researchers had the opportunity to share and discuss the principles and applications of RCTs as well as better understand the steps of experimental design and data analysis, and interpreting the results. Dr. Yonas Alem brought to the session a wealth of knowledge and the lessons of his extensive experience in conducting and teaching RCTs.

Participating researchers, with diverse research backgrounds and expertise, interacted positively in a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere. Together they explored how RCTs can be used to measure and evaluate the impact of, for example, microfinance programs, carbon taxes, forest conservation policies, etc., thereby helping to improve the participants' understanding of this method.

Through the two-day workshop, participating researchers rekindled research ideas and positive feelings about the nuanced world of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The workshop not only broadened their theoretical foundation but also equipped them with practical skills, helping them apply RCT methods effectively in their respective fields.

Pham Ngoc Tham - Fellow of the UEH-ISS Joint Doctoral Program commented: “The in-depth knowledge of Dr. Yonas Alem is invaluable. This workshop not only expands my understanding of RCTs but also gives me the confidence to undertake more complex research projects in the future.”

Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Khanh Nam - Vice Head of UEH-CELG and Director of EfD-Vietnam – stated: "Although RCTs have been applied for a long time in the field of medicine, in economics it is still a new thing. With the guidance of experts on RCTs and the cooperation of researchers, we hope that this workshop will help further shape the research overview for Vietnamese scholars, thereby leading to more applied research on RCTs in the field of economics".
