Launching CTELG Talk Series Event series

In accordance with the spirit of commitment to community service - spreading knowledge, on March 26^th, 2022, the Center for Economics, Law and Management Training (CTELG) under the UEH School of Economics, Law and State Management initiated the first season of the CTELG Talk Series with over 130 attendees.

CTELG Talk Series will be a series of conversations and presentations from national and international authors, discussing colorful aspects of economy, law and management organized by CTELG. CTELG Talk Series is expected to be held once every two quarters in 2022 and once every quarter in 2023 to share new sources of knowledge, to update new information and trends in economics, law and manage.

Overview of the event CTELG Talk Series first season, part 1, through online format

CTELG Talk, Session 1 of the First season was held in terms of Valuation field, themed “Selection of similar businesses in business valuation activities in ASEAN countries” by Mr. Nguyen Kim Duc - Presented by CTELG Director. The program is organized under Hybrid form (direct format combined with online format).

The event connected more than 80 participants directly at Hall B1.205 (279 Nguyen Tri Phuong Campus) as well as more than 50 participants attended online via Google Meet platform. Guests attending the event are delegates from Price Management Department (Ministry of Finance); Presidents, General directors, Managers, price appraisers at valuation companies; Director of the valuation consulting Department of auditing companies, investment funds and banks. In addition, the program also received the warm attention of delegates from other industries/professionals listed as real estate development, construction, finance, franchising and international business.

In the opening speech, Mr. Nguyen Kim Duc introduced CTELG to business leaders and shared CTELG orientations in KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER - one of the three important pillars identified by CTELG in the early days of its establishment. Through the panel discussion, CTELG sent the message to the guests: “We do understand that this is the time when CTELG, as a short-term training center, needs to be a pioneer, to make more efforts than ever before. This is the time to perform well the spirit of COMMUNITY SERVICE - LANDING KNOWLEDGE”.

Mr. Nguyen Kim Duc shared at the program the spirit of community service commitment - spreading knowledge that CTELG is aiming for and receiving the support of the participants.

At CTELG Talk - Session 1, Mr. Nguyen Kim Duc, representing their author group (Dr. Hay Sinh, MSc. Tran Bich Van, and MSc. Asessor. Nguyen Kim Duc), presented “The model of choosing enterprises is similar in operation. Business Valuation Activity in ASEAN countries”. The first version of this theme, conducted for the Vietnamese market, was presented at the 20th ASEAN Price Appraisers Conference 2017 in Singapore and honored to receive the “BEST PAPER AWARD” award by Prof. Lim Lan Yuan - President of WAVO (World Association of Valuation Organizations) awarded in the name of President of AVA (ASEAN Valuers Association).

In more details, Mr. Duc presented some key features in applying current academic research to the practice of valuation activities; at the same time, guiding the guests on how to apply the similar business selection model into practice. International publications on mineral valuation and mass appraisal written by experts from organizations with valuation functions in the world were also introduced by the speaker to the participants.

Through this program, the speaker provided guests with more ways to explore the open scientific repository and provided a completely new, professional and class-oriented view of the valuation profession. The speaker also asserted that each business valuation dossier is unique and no two business profiles are the same. Therefore, a price appraiser, like an artist, needs passion to sublimate, in which his work - the appraisal certificate - is tailored for each set of documents.

Summarizing his presentation, Mr. Nguyen Kim Duc emphasized: “Valuation is a science or art [...] is a famous concept of Professor Lim Lan Yuan, President of WAVO; in which, artistry is the professional judgment of the appraiser. Ideally, artistry exists due to the professional nature; However, in reality, the artistry also comes from the absence of theoretical foundations or empirical research to support because practical activities are always diverse. Therefore, the greatest practical significance of these events is to contribute to a partial shift from art to science so that the artistry, over time, will be created in accordance with the specificity of the profession”.
