Decoding Global Shifts Through the Lens of Finance

UEH's financial research capacity continues to be demonstrated through the use of large-scale datasets and the analysis of relationships between global variables and the operations of the financial system. In particular, the studies not only focus on financial outcomes but also delve into the mechanisms through which actors respond to external shocks:

Global Security & Bank Liquidity: Analyzing the impact of terrorism risk on banks' liquidity creation, thereby clarifying the relationship between security shocks and the functioning of the global financial system.
Trade Finance & Law: Research on Letters of Credit (L/C) focuses on the legal mechanism of payment undertakings issued by banks, while examining how interim relief measures can be used to address disputes arising from commercial transactions.

Delving into Behavioral Psychology and the Mechanisms Behind Social Well-Being

Rather than merely observing behavior at the surface level, this week's publications continue to unpack the cognitive, emotional, and psychological mechanisms underlying individual decision-making. The studies apply theoretical frameworks such as Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) and Self-Determination Theory to clarify how environments, emotions, and personal identities jointly shape behavior:

Medical Tourism & Sustainable Consumption: Distinguishing the pathways through which cognition and emotion are formed, while explaining how minimalism can translate into ethical consumption under the influence of "eco-anxiety."
Mental Health: Providing a direct perspective on the consequences of the "mystery box" trend and the dual role of family ties during periods of economic crisis.

From AI Applications to Explainable Artificial Intelligence

The technology-related publications demonstrate a shift from the mere application of AI toward the development of models that combine predictive capabilities with greater transparency and interpretability. This approach places people and decision-making at the center of technology adoption:

AI & E-Commerce Management: The study Cost-Sensitive and TPE-Driven Ensemble Models with xAI for E-Commerce Churn Prediction combines cost-sensitive learning, Tree-structured Parzen Estimator (TPE), and Explainable AI (xAI) to predict customer churn. This approach simultaneously addresses data imbalance, optimizes hyperparameters, and enhances model interpretability.
Digital Transformation & Employee Performance: Research on the impact of digitalization on employee performance expands the concept of digital literacy beyond technical skills, emphasizing the role of digital adaptability as a mechanism connecting digital capabilities with work performance.

Climate Finance and Co-Benefits for Biodiversity

Expanding the concept of sustainable development, UEH researchers continue to examine the relationship between climate finance flows and biodiversity conservation. The study Climate finance and biodiversity: an institutional perspective develops an institutional approach to examine whether financial resources for climate adaptation and mitigation are associated with biodiversity outcomes, while distinguishing these relationships from voluntary carbon credit activities.

This approach contributes to broadening the scope of climate finance, moving beyond the goal of reducing carbon emissions toward creating environmental co-benefits, strengthening institutional adaptive capacity, and conserving ecosystems.

Knowledge Creation from “Hidden Mechanisms,” Advancing Interdisciplinary Research

By combining multi-level behavioral models, psychosocial theories, Machine Learning, Explainable AI, and cross-country data, these studies not only identify phenomena but also delve into the mechanisms underlying their operation. Through this approach, UEH continues to strengthen its interdisciplinary research orientation, connecting economic knowledge with issues related to technology, health, the environment, institutions, and society, while contributing scientific evidence to digital transformation, sustainable development, and enhanced adaptive capacity in the evolving context.
