Ho Chi Minh City Economic Annual Report Series is a research publication jointly conducted by the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) and the Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Office. Following the success of the first publication “Ho Chi Minh City Macroeconomic Report: Results of 2023 and Forecast for 2024”, the research on Ho Chi Minh City’s economy in the first 6 months of 2024 has officially released with the title “Ho Chi Minh City Economic Report: Recovery and Challenges”.
“Ho Chi Minh City Economic Report: Recovery and Challenges” is a research publication jointly conducted by the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City and the Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Office, with the advice of Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dong Phong - Party Secretary, Chairman of the Council of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City; Prof. Dr. Su Dinh Thanh - Director of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City; Mr. Nguyen Khac Hoang - Director of Ho Chi Minh City Office of Statistics; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trong Hoai - Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Asian Business and Economic Studies, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Khanh Nam - Principal of UEH College of Economics, Law and Government. The author group include Dr. Ho Hoang Anh - University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (editor); Mr. Nguyen Van Thang - Ho Chi Minh City Office of Statistics (co-editor); Le Minh Hung - Ho Chi Minh City Office of Statistics; Dr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Ho Chi Minh City Office of Statistics; Mr. Vo Duc Hoang Vu - University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City.
The publication provides a comprehensive view of Ho Chi Minh City's economy in the first 6 months of 2024 and the achieved results, analyzes challenges, forecasts recovery potential as well as suggesting policies for the city authority. To be illustrated, the publication covers 3 main contents including: (1) Overview of the world economy and Vietnam; (2) Economic growth of Ho Chi Minh City in the first 6 months of 2024; (3) Economic prospects of Ho Chi Minh City in the last 6 months of 2024 and policy suggestions.
Therefore, in order to officially release the publication, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City and Ho Chi Minh City Office of Statistics jointly organized a seminar to launch the "Ho Chi Minh City Economic Report: Recovery and Challenges" on July 29, 2024.
Overview of the seminar launching the Ho Chi Minh City Economic Report
Attending the seminar, on behalf of the authority, departments, divisions, and services of Ho Chi Minh City, and businesses in the city, were Mr. Vo Van Hoan - Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee; Dr. Le Truong Hai Hieu - Head of the Economic - Budget Committee, Ho Chi Minh City People's Council; Mr. Nguyen Khac Hoang - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Office of Statistics; Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade; Dr. Tran Anh Tuan - Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Enterprise Innovation Management; Dr. Truong Minh Huy Vu - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies; Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Hoa - Chairman of the Board of Members of the Ho Chi Minh City State Financial Investment Company
On behalf of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, there were Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dong Phong - Party Committee Secretary, Chairman of the University Council; Prof. Dr. Su Dinh Thanh - Director of UEH; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Quang Hung - Vice President of the University; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Khanh Nam - Principal of the UEH College of Economics, Law and Government; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trong Hoai - Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Asian Business and Economic Studies, and distinguished teachers who are leaders of Schools/Institutes and lecturers of UEH. In addition, there were also representatives of universities in the economic sector in Ho Chi Minh City.
In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Su Dinh Thanh - Director of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City - remarked: “University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) is currently a Multidisciplinary and Sustainable University. Developing according to this model, the University has promoted the strategy of “Connecting the community - Spreading knowledge - Sustainable action”, fulfilling its social responsibility to the community in the Southeast region and the Mekong Delta in training human resources and developing the economy - society. On this foundation, we are to promote applied research, analysis of the economy-society, economic reporting, contributing to the development of the local economy in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular. In that context, the annual economic report of Ho Chi Minh City was launched on the basis of cooperation between UEH and the Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Office, which is a useful tool for the city’s authority in the process of building and operating socio-economic development policies. Concurrently, it is also an important reference source for investors and domestic and foreign enterprises to have more information on investment orientation and market expansion in the business development strategy of Ho Chi Minh City.”

Mr. Nguyen Khac Hoang - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Office - asserted: “In January 2024, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City and Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Office jointly launched the “Ho Chi Minh City Macroeconomic Report: Results of 2023 and Forecast for 2024”. So far, the forecasts in this first publication has been relatively close to the actual economic situation of the city in the first 6 months of 2024. The second publication with the theme “Recovery and Challenges” released today continues to be based on the cooperation of the two units, one is the academic unit of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, and the other is the statistical unit, thereby providing necessary information, practical analysis and assessment to contribute to the development of Ho Chi Minh City”.

Highly appreciating the cooperation between UEH and the Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Office, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee - Mr. Vo Van Hoan - shared: "I do welcome UEH to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Office to produce a publication on the city's economic report and to organize a seminar to clarify the research results. What we are doing has created a very important channel of analysis and criticism by economists to find accurate policy paths, strong and sustainable development directions for Ho Chi Minh City."

At the seminar, on behalf of the research team, Dr. Ho Hoang Anh - Lecturer of the School of Economics, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (Editor-in-chief) - presented the "Ho Chi Minh City Economic Report: Recovery and Challenges". Delegates discussed many challenges of the city's economy in the first 6 months of 2024. Based on this foundation, they proposed policies and solutions to help Ho Chi Minh City focus on accelerating the process of transforming the growth model towards high technology and greening, thereby increasing the growth rate in the medium term.

Also within the framework of the discussion, UEH and the Ho Chi Minh City Statistics Office officially signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in training, research, and consulting to involve in reviewing the results of statistical surveys and policies issued by the Party and Government related to statistics, policies and research programs on the socio-economic development of Ho Chi Minh City.
