Remarkable progress in technology integration for a multidisciplinary UEH University

Throughout the university’s 45 years of storied establishment and development, UEH continues to affirm its highly respected standing in Vietnam’s higher education sector, but also internationally as well. As one of 14 key public universities, UEH currently pioneers in economics and management in the nation. The next five years between 2021 and 2025 will be a significant phase for UEH in implementing its strategic goals for restructuring as the university proceeds to achieve its grand ambition of becoming a multi- disciplinary and sustainable university.

The academic and professional workforce at UEH are more than just citizens; they are active global participants in the cause of sustainable development through art inspiration and social contribution. Upon implementing the new multidisciplinary university governance model, and in launching UEH College of Technology and Design, the University Board of Management have done their due diligence to ensure a high-quality group of young talents and working professionals. It is precisely here that each and every UEH member is constantly pushed beyond their limits in order to acquire new skills and knowledge, adapt to new technologies, and become trailblazers in the multidisciplinary approach and incorporation of technology and its technical knowledge in the harmonious and flexible use of economics and management best practices so as to exercise changes and breakthroughs that allow us to more quickly adapt to the present day.

UEH’s first-ever listing in International Journals and Conference

UEH Institute of Innovation (UII) takes the lead in innovation and technological integration in working, learning and teaching. Since 2021, the UII has expanded their academic curriculum with new coursework in Technology and Innovation to help UEH students stay abreast with the latest changes and trends of the world in the new digital age. UII team has made every considerable effort in researching and incorporating new technology across different disciplines, most notably the science of Human-Computer Interaction, or HCI. This past July and August, UEH received its first-ever recognition for having 01 article listed in an international journal and 02 international conferences centering on HCI. These are namely ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology 2021 (VRST) and ACM Interactive Surfaces and Spaces Conference 2021 (ACM ISS 2021).

The ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology conference (VRST)² is an annual international forum aiming to exchange experience and knowledge between researchers and developers related to VR/AR software and technology. VRST is a gathering of international research teams working together on XR, as well as a number of world-leading companies supplying or using the XR system. VRST 2021 will be organized, in hybrid mode, in Osaka, Japan, hosted by Osaka University between December 8 – 10, 2021. The representative of UEH Institute of Innovation is a member of the Board of Review and  will be evaluating 06 research papers participating in the conference.

ACM Interactive Surfaces and Spaces Conference 2021 (ACM ISS 2021)³ will take place in Łódź (Poland) from November 14th to 17th,  2021. ACM Interactive Surfaces and Spaces is the place to be, to learn about the design, development and use of new and growing interactive surface technologies and spaces. This conference, also in hybrid form, will be held in Łódź, Poland’s third largest city where it exudes vibrancy and electrifies in a multi-cultural atmosphere. The live sessions will take place at at EC1b – a 19th-century power plant that was reconstructed into a center for science and assembly. The representatives of UEH Institute of Innovation have completed review and evaluation of the research paper to take part in the conference.

Besides, internationally published article titled “VXSlate: Exploring Combination of Head Movements and Mobile Touch for Large Virtual Display Interaction”5 also gained a lot of attention. Through research, readers will get to learn more about VXSlate’s application, which helps to fine-tune multi-touch content operations with better accuracy on large virtual screens, and improve defects that virtual reality (VR) can not process, such as causing fatigue, especially for precise manipulation tasks due to lack of physical surface. To tackle those problems, the author studied VXSlate’s design, which is an interactive technique using large virtual screens as an extension of a tablet. Furthermore, it pointed to the potential of exploring the VXSlate design area as well as using mixed reality (MR).

The article was published and posted on the website of ACM Designing Interactive Systems Conference 2021 (DIS)6  on June 28th under the topic: “Nowhere and Everywhere”, which further exemplified the severe impact that COVID has had on people’s lives while simultaneously pushed designers and researchers to pay more attention to the chaos and the unknown so as to adapt to the “new normal” everyday life. This also serves as both an opportunity and an appealing challenge for the conference to proceed in an asynchronous dispersal form while enabling easier access to the general public.

The system concept was adjusted based on the recommendations and approvals from Chalmers University of TechnologySweden

UEH to become a multi-disciplinary and sustainable university

These milestones serve as great steppingstone for UEH in its transformation efforts while upholding the university's core values to be a leader of change towards sustainable development. UEH not only conducts research but also aspires to apply innovation to improve the quality of life, create an ideal and conducive environment for prosperity and contribute to a technologically advanced and innovation-reliant economy.

UEH is gradually establishing its presence across different international environments and disciplines. The university is proud to be one of the first Vietnamese universities to receive recognition from prestigious journals and forums in Interactive Design. This is certainly a remarkable progress in UEH’s journey to become a multidisciplinary university.

1Human-computer interaction (HCI) includes researching, planning, designing and exploiting communications between users and computers.  This is considered to be a cross between computer science, behavioral science, design, media studies, and a number of other pieces of research.
