School of Mathematics - Statistics, UEH College of Economics, Law and Government welcoming and working with the Society of Actuaries SOA

On the afternoon of November 27, 2024, the School of Mathematics - Statistics (UEH-CELG) was honored to welcome and to work with a delegation of experts from the Society of Actuaries (SOA). The program was not only an opportunity to discuss the orientation of training program development between UEH and SOA but also an opportunity for students to gain professional knowledge, practical experience and career opportunities in the field of insurance actuarial through the exchange at Hall B1.205.

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) is the world's leading professional organization for insurance actuaries, founded in 1949 in the United States. SOA offers certification programs, research, and specialized learning materials to develop and to enhance the capabilities of insurance and finance professionals. The association focuses on areas listed as life insurance, health insurance, retirement, finance, and risk management.

The School of Mathematics - Statistics (UEH-CELG) has important cooperation with SOA in the development of Risk Analysis and Actuarial Science training programs. Specifically, the training program was built based on the comments of SOA experts, closely following the professional certification exams of this association. Both of these training programs have also been fully recognized by SOA for all 3 VEEs: Economics, Mathematical Statistics and Accounting & Finance, giving UEH students a great competitive advantage when entering the labor market. Currently, the program has submitted an application to join the UCAP - IC list and is awaiting results.

Attending the program, on behalf of SOA, there were Mr. Sean Hsiang Kau - FSA, MAAA, Appointed Actuary and Chief Risk Officer, Hanwha Life Vietnam; Mr. Nguyen Cong Minh Hoang - ASA, Actuary Manager, Hanwha Life Vietnam; Ms. Jessie Li - FSA, Regional Director of East and Southeast Asia of SOA; Ms. Saadiqa Akhtar - Candidate Connection Specialist of Asia Region of SOA. 

On behalf of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), there were Dr. Tran Thi Tuan Anh - Vice Rector of the UEH College of Economics, Law and Government; Dr. Ha Van Son - Vice Dean of the School of Mathematics - Statistics; Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Mien - Director of the Master's program in Economic Mathematics; Ms. Bui Thi Le Thuy - Director of the Bachelor's program in Risk Analysis and Insurance Pricing along with lecturers and students of the School of Mathematics - Statistics.

Overview of the reception and working program

In the first part of the reception and working program, the delegation of experts from SOA met those lecturers teaching the Risk Analysis and Actuarial Science program to discuss some contents related to the curriculum and professional certification exams of the SOA association. On this occasion, representatives from the Association congratulated the School on the achievement of the Risk Analysis and Actuarial Science program being fully recognized by all 3 VEEs. SOA affirmed that the event regarding the School’s efforts to join the Risk Analysis and Actuarial Science programs to the UCAP - IC list is a very appropriate step to help enhance the prestige of the program, creating a premise for continuing to join UCAP - AC and CAE.

In the second part, the expert group from SOA continued with a direct exchange with students at Hall B1.205. The students learned a lot of useful information regarding the Association through the presentation of Ms. Jessie Li - FSA, Director of East and Southeast Asia of SOA, with contents listed as information related to the SOA association, information concerning the professional certification exams, destinations for SOA members, and the learning resources that SOA provides for students. After that, Mr. Sean Hsiang Kau - FSA, MAAA, Appointed Actuary and Risk Director of Hanwha Life Vietnam and Mr. Nguyen Cong Minh Hoang - ASA, Head of Actuary Department of Hanwha Life Vietnam shared real stories in the industry. Students listened to the appeal of this career field, experiences in balancing work, life and studying for the certification exam, or the qualities that an "actuary" needs to have.

In addition, at the end of the program, students had their questions answered by experts regarding the SOA association and issues related to work, salary, promotion opportunities for actuaries and interesting issues like the impact of AI on the role of actuaries in today's era. The program took place in a lively atmosphere when students actively asked questions and interacted with the guests, enthusiastically participated in the Minigame prepared by the organizers and received valuable gifts, including 02 P/FM exam fee sponsorships worth 260 USD/1.

The program of welcoming and working with the delegation of experts from the Society of Actuaries (SOA) is not only a milestone affirming the quality and stature of the Risk Analysis and Insurance Actuarial training program at UEH but also opens up great opportunities for students to access knowledge and practical experience from leading experts in the industry. Hopefully, the Association and the School of Mathematics - Statistics (UEH-CELG) will have opportunities to cooperate and to organize useful programs for students in the future.
