Stepping Beyond the Comfort Zone: UEH Students' International Summer Journey in Taiwan

Over the course of ten days, students engaged in a diverse range of activities, including experiential Chinese language classes, visits to research centers and enterprises, cultural and historical exploration of Taiwan, as well as intercultural exchange and networking. Beyond expanding their knowledge and global perspectives, the program strengthened students' adaptability, intercultural competence, and innovative mindset in an international learning environment.

The 2026 MCUT Language & Culture Summer Camp was organized by Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

Following the opening ceremony, the ten-day journey officially began with Chinese language classes, laboratory visits, street food experiences, and a variety of cultural exchange activities. Every experience became a valuable lesson—not only in language and culture, but also in adaptability, collaboration, and developing a broader global perspective.

Through just five experiential Chinese language classes, UEH students strengthened their communication skills while gaining a deeper appreciation of Taiwanese culture. Activities such as Chinese calligraphy, creating Chinese names, making traditional paper fans and lanterns, practicing intercultural communication scenarios, and participating in workshops with international students transformed language learning into an engaging cultural experience. The handcrafted souvenirs they created became meaningful keepsakes of a short yet memorable learning journey.

Beyond the language classes, students explored the education and research ecosystem of Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) and Chang Gung University of Science and Technology. The delegation visited advanced research centers specializing in smart medical devices, organic electronics, and green energy batteries, while also learning about academic programs in business administration, industrial engineering and management, electrical engineering, and environmental safety and health. The academic journey was further enriched through a visit to the Formosa Plastics Group Museum, where students gained insights into the company's history, corporate culture, technological innovation, and contributions to modern industry.

In addition to academic activities, the program offered opportunities to experience Taiwan's rich cultural heritage. At Dadaocheng, Taipei's historic commercial district, students strolled through heritage streets, visited the Xiahai City God Temple, and explored the local culture through its vibrant street food scene. The journey continued at the National Palace Museum, home to one of Asia's most remarkable collections of historical artifacts, providing students with deeper insights into Taiwan's history, art, and cultural heritage.

The journey was not limited to museums and cultural sites. Students also experienced the electrifying atmosphere of a live baseball game at Xinzhuang Baseball Stadium, joining thousands of enthusiastic fans in cheering for their favorite team. Even without fully understanding every rule of the game, they discovered how sports can transcend language barriers and bring people together.

Another highlight of the program was the International Talent Night, where UEH students performed alongside peers from around the world through music, dance, and various cultural performances. The evening was filled with laughter, applause, and memorable moments, creating a truly meaningful space for intercultural connection.

As the program came to an end, what remained with participants was more than memories of laboratory visits, academic activities, and late-night rehearsals. The most valuable outcomes were personal growth, greater openness to different cultures, and friendships that extended far beyond national borders.

Nguyen Thi My Uyen, a student from the School of Business, International Business – Marketing major, shared: "This has been the most incredible experience of my university life. It gave me a feeling unlike anything I had ever experienced before—something I would never have known if I hadn't stepped out of my comfort zone and joined this program. I cherish every single moment. Although the journey was short, it was enough for me to truly experience Taiwanese culture and people, make friends with talented and welcoming students from around the world, and see firsthand MCUT's outstanding learning facilities."

Although the Taiwan Summer Camp 2026 has concluded, its impact will continue to accompany each participant throughout their personal and professional journey. Through academic exploration, cultural immersion, and international exchange, the program not only broadened students' knowledge but also nurtured resilience, a global mindset, and an innovative spirit. The experience reflects UEH's commitment to creating a holistic learning environment where students are empowered to adapt, lead change, and contribute meaningful value to society.
