How can students streamline academic writing while maximizing efficiency? This question was the focus of the seminar “Supercharge Your Research Writing: Leveraging AI for Maximum Productivity” hosted at UEH English Zone.
Marking her second collaboration with UEH English Zone, Ms. Đào Xuân Phương Trang, a lecturer from the Faculty of English at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, delivered an engaging and informative session on utilizing AI in academic research. The event began with the icebreaker game “AI-Switch,” instantly energizing the room with laughter and camaraderie, setting the stage for a dynamic and insightful discussion.
Ms. Phương Trang guided attendees through an exploration of AI’s evolution, juxtaposing human intelligence and artificial capabilities in areas such as proficiency, OECD benchmarks, and revolutionary AI advancements. Highlighting popular AI tools like CapCut, Canva, ChatGPT, Duolingo, and Turnitin, she emphasized how these technologies are becoming integral to modern learning and creativity.
The seminar delved into actionable strategies for applying AI to academic research. Key principles for crafting effective research papers were discussed, including:
Clarity and Focus: Ensuring clear, specific research objectives.
Relevance: Producing findings that address practical needs or contribute meaningfully to academic fields.
Ms. Phương Trang provided practical prompts to help students brainstorm ideas, refine research topics, and develop targeted questions, making the writing process more accessible and less overwhelming. A standout segment of the seminar was the detailed breakdown of research paper structure, with a strong emphasis on the literature review as the “backbone” of the process. Attendees were introduced to a comprehensive workflow - from setting objectives and sourcing materials to synthesizing findings and proper citation - providing a clear roadmap for crafting high-quality academic papers.
One of the seminar’s highlights was the hands-on introduction to AI tools tailored for academic research. Participants eagerly explored applications such as:
Semantic Scholar: A powerful academic search engine.
Consensus: A tool for summarizing scientific consensus on complex topics.
Elicit: A platform for generating innovative research questions.
ChatPDF: Simplifying analysis of PDF documents.
NotebookLM: Organizing and annotating research content efficiently.
The interactive nature of this segment sparked lively engagement, with students taking notes and testing tools in real time, further enhancing their understanding of AI’s potential in research.
In her concluding remarks, Ms. Phương Trang underscored the importance of balancing AI’s capabilities with human analytical skills. While AI offers immense advantages, over-reliance can diminish personal intellectual growth. A synergistic approach, leveraging both human creativity and artificial intelligence, is key to achieving academic excellence. The seminar concluded in an atmosphere of enthusiasm and inspiration. Students left with not only practical knowledge but also the confidence to integrate AI tools into their academic and professional journeys. Ms. Phương Trang’s relatable and passionate delivery resonated with attendees, creating a supportive and engaging learning environment.
