What will you do with a language degree once you graduate? There is no denying that learning a language increases your employability and shows that you are a quick learner. The ability to speak another language fluently is either a requirement for some jobs or a significant advantage and many recruiters value this quality in candidates even when it does not directly relate to the position they are looking to fill.
The ability to speak and write fluently opens up a variety of rewarding career options, but we should exercise caution when identifying a specific field of interest without first ensuring that we have the necessary abilities, knowledge, and experience. Language Workshop with the topic "The Mystery Of Career Prosperity For English Majors," organized by UEH English Zone and the School of Foreign Languages on August 24, 2023, with the participation of Ms. Nguyen Huynh Hong Ngoc, Master of Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Newcastle University, UK, will then allow you to access more specialized job opportunities and continue on your path.
The event received a lot of attention from students who are passionate about languages
Ms. Hong Ngoc, who was attending the Language Workshop for the first time, shared insightful experiences for students, participants in developing a wider perspective on career opportunities in the Language major. She shared, she has experience working with more than 25 companies and the jobs are developed thanks to her proficiency in the language.
English language learners in general have always worked to improve themselves every day to seize beneficial opportunities. According to her, there are four main directions in the language industry that can be used to create career opportunities: Academic, Translation, creative jobs, and Corporate.
Four major career branches of linguistics are analyzed
The speaker emphasized that while language will be the starting point, students' ability to develop the necessary skills will ultimately determine success.
She also discussed whether language students could be replaced by artificial intelligence at the current stage of technological development. Nothing, she claimed, could ever program a real human to be able to take the place of people in the future. AI can never fully replace human emotions, thoughts, and qualities. For instance, when it comes to translation work, people have unique “slangs” based on their age and place of residence that only humans can use and truly comprehend. So, when comparing AI and humans, AI is just a tool to improve productivity and help people complete tasks well. However, it is an unproven and underappreciated theory that AI will eventually replace humans, particularly in the field of linguistics.
Participants in the event understood the message that Language will only serve as a foundation; students' ability to develop the necessary skills during the learning process will ultimately determine success such as academic study, translation skills, international collaboration, communication, journalism, economics, commerce, and services,...
Language Workshop is a monthly event that is included in the UEH English Zone's activities and covers a variety of useful subjects to help students and staff gradually develop an interest in learning language, thereby creating a habit of using and improving communication skills.
