For the first time ever, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) is formally recognized in the Top 400 Best Universities in Asia, according to the SCImago Institutions Rankings 2021.
SCImago, a prestigious Spanish ranking institution, has recently announced its assessment report of all universities and other research-oriented institutions, in which University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) was placed at
#376 out of 1437 Best Universities in Asia. More notably, UEH was ranked
217th for its outstanding performance in research output.
SCImago measures and ranks research-focused institutions worldwide based on 03 criteria: Research Performance (50%), Innovation Outputs (30%) and Societal Impact (20%). These data are collected over a period of 5 years and completed at least 2 years before the formal publication of the rankings, with the only exception being the web indicators, whose data could only be accounted for from the previous year. For instance, if the selected year of publication is 2021, the results then are based on data recorded between 2015 and 2019, with web indexes from 2020.
According to SCImago 2021, in order for an institution to be considered for ranking under Research Performance, they must have published at least 100 Scopus articles within the last year of the 5-year period, meaning 2019. The fact that UEH has made this ranking for the first time in 2021 speaks volume to the diligence and hard work exhibited by the entire UEH Faculties and Staff for having increased the number of Scopus articles significantly since 2015, and especially their exceptional performance in international research publication for UEH in 2019.
Professor Su Dinh Thanh - UEH President shared: "It was noted that in 2020, UEH already published more than 300 articles on the Scopus database, which signals positively for the University’s continued, and even higher ranking presence in SCImago 2022."
Unlike other fields in Natural Sciences or STEM, publishing in international journals specialized in Economics, Management, Business and Law is considered to be significantly more challenging due to the limited number of reputable journals. Therefore, UEH’s current placement in SCImago 2021 reflects the University's commendable efforts, vision and execution on policies to encourage, develop, and invest in the improvement of both quantity and quality of scientific research according to global standards in the age of internationalization.
Furthermore, it can be seen that the majority of featured universities on SCImago 2021 are multidisciplinary and previously internationally-ranked institutions, which serves as great incentive for the entire UEH community to continue pursuing further innovative, dynamic and interdisciplinary studies to keep the University competitively on par with the rest of the world.
By 2025, UEH commits to place itself among the Top 500 Best Universities according to QS Asia University Ranking, where one of the main data sources for evaluation of scientific research indicators is also extracted from the Scopus database. Therefore, with the recognition from SCImago and the positive outcome that UEH expects to achieve between 2020 and 2021, the University is hopeful that we’ll be able to reach even higher successes promptly.
