UEH Strengthens Anti-Smoking Campaign, Monitoring, and Enforcement on Campus

11 Jul, 2023

Since 2016, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) has enforced a comprehensive smoking ban across all campuses to cultivate a healthy, clean, and respectful learning and working environment. This policy applies to all staff, students, and visitors on campus, ensuring public health and preserving campus aesthetics. UEH actively promotes awareness, regularly monitors compliance, and strictly handles violations to uphold the policy. This policy is reviewed and updated periodically every 5 years, with the latest update being in 2021.

Goal of a Smoke-Free Environment

Regulations on smoking bans on campus and designated smoking areas are stipulated in Appendix 1, Section 11 of the Student Code of Conduct for undergraduate students (Decision No. 3744/QD-DHKT-CTCT, dated October 24, 2016). This regulation underscores the importance of a disciplined, smoke-free, and clean learning and working environment for the entire UEH community. All individuals at UEH are prohibited from smoking or bringing any tobacco products onto campus, applicable across all UEH premises.

The smoking ban reflects UEH’s commitment to community health, with three key objectives: (1) Health protection, eliminating secondhand smoke exposure; (2) Creating a fresh and green environment conducive to study and work; and (3) Protecting campus aesthetics by reducing cigarette waste, contributing to UEH’s clean and green atmosphere.

Reinforced Awareness, Monitoring, and Enforcement

To ensure compliance, UEH continuously educates and encourages staff, students, and the broader community to embrace this regulation. Individual cooperation and responsibility contribute to a respectful, healthy campus environment.

UEH reinforces this policy through regular checks and strict enforcement, with actions including:

  • Reminders for initial violations (up to three instances)
  • Warnings or additional measures for repeated offenses or non-compliance after reminders
  • More severe disciplinary action for serious violations

The anti-smoking policy, coupled with consistent awareness efforts, monitoring, and strict handling of violations, marks UEH’s dedication to a smoke-free learning and working environment—promoting health protection and enhancing the overall quality of life on campus.
