UEH Students Wining the First Prize at the National Science Competition for Students "Olympic of Econometrics and its Applications 2024”

On June 2, 2024, in Hanoi, UEH students participated and obtained high achievements in the final round of the 9th National Science Contest for Students "Econometrics and its Applications" organized by the Central Student Association, Academy of Finance, and Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam.

The competition aims to promote socio-economic research that applies mathematical and econometric models, data science, and artificial intelligence among students nationwide. This year, the contest attracted 266 research topics from 21 universities and institutes across the country, increasing 64% compared to that in 2023.

Council of Examiners

The Council of Examiners includes Dr. Vo Tri Thanh - Economic Expert, Director of the Institute for Brand Strategy and Competitiveness Research, Chairman of VNCPEC (Chairman of the Board of Examiners); Dr. Le Xuan Nghia - Economic Expert, Director of Business Development Research Institute - Hanoi Industry and Trade Association, Former Vice Chairman of the National Financial Supervisory Commission; Dr. Nguyen Thang - Former Director of Center for Analysis and Forecasting, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuyen - Former Director of the Institute of Financial Economics, Ministry of Finance; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Do Van Thanh - Former Deputy Director of the National Center for Socio-Economic Information and Forecasting, Ministry of Planning and Investment; Dr. Luong Van Khoi - Deputy Director of the Central Institute for Economic Management Research, Ministry of Planning and Investment; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Ho Dang Phuc - Former Head of the Department of Probability and Statistics, Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Science and Technology; Dr. Nguyen Viet Hung - Director of Hanoi Department of Information and Communication, etc.

This year's contest has been innovated in both the quality and quantity of topics. The organizers highly appreciate the seriousness and investment from students in modern, methodically implemented quantitative research. Along with that, the organization of strict evaluation from the school-level council has positively contributed to the quality of the competition.

After the selection process, on June 2, 2024, two groups of excellent UEH students had the opportunity to directly present their research content at the final round in Hanoi. This year's topics use a variety of new methods, applying diverse research samples with high reliability, responding to current issues, and having a good presentation in English medium. UEH team was highly appreciated and impressed the jury by their confidence, mastery of knowledge, and spirit of inquiry throughout the competition.

The UEH team winning the first prize this year included K47 students from the School of Finance: Tran Dinh Hoang, Doan Ngo Truong Vu, and Bui Le Vi. The group carried out the project "Geopolitical Risks and Cryptocurrency Volatility: A New Safe Haven Asset in Uncertain Times? A GARCH-M-GJR-LEV Model Approach" under the supervision of Mr. To Cong Nguyen Bao and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Bryan Weber, and performed excellently in the final round. This was also the first topic with the participation and supervision of a foreign lecturer.

In addition, in this competition, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City excellently won 4 Second prizes, 7 Third prizes and 12 Consolation prizes.

UEH's journey of creating common values is not only to accommodate professional knowledge but also to focus on developing comprehensive capabilities for students. UEH students are encouraged to become creative, autonomous, and capable of creating value for the community. The successes in the field of scientific research and practical application of UEH students are a clear testament to advancement on that journey.
