University Day series: Final Round and Award Ceremony of English Karaoke Contest "UEH EngKara Idol 2023"

In the atmosphere to celebrate the 47th anniversary of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (October 27, 1976 - October 27, 2023) and 41st anniversary of Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20, 1982 - November 20, 2023) and especially to welcome a new journey – UEH Multi-disciplinary and Sustainable University, UEH Labour Union organized English Karaoke Contest "UEH EngKara Idol 2023". After more than one month of implementation, the Contest has come to the Final Round with impressive performances!

In order to be a pioneer in the Multidisciplinary and Sustainable University journey, it requires the consensus, support and commitment of all UEHers towards the University's strategy. Therefore, meaningful Labour Union activities for officials and employees of all generations will be frequently and effectively deployed in order to foster the bond among individuals.

And English Karaoke contest "UEH EngKara Idol 2023" is one of the meaningful activities. The contest is for all UEH officials and employees with the desire to promote the spirit of love for learning foreign languages via music. The program is also to promote the role of aesthetic education, building a healthy cultural life at UEH, and to enhance connection and communication within UEHers community and to provide opportunities for UEHers to confidently express their personality and showcase their talents as well.

After more than a month of implementation, the contest has attracted the attention and participation of nearly 100 UEHers with 65 performances by different departments and offices. 16 best performances in two categories of solo and duet-trio were selected for the Final Round.

On the evening of November 10, 2023, "UEH EngKara Idol 2023" Final Round and Award Ceremony officially took place in Hall B1.302 with the presence of Dr. Nguyen Thien Duy - President of UEH Labour Union, Dr. Phan Thi Bao Quyen - Vice President of UEH Labour Union; MSc. Phan Thi Thu Hang - Standing member of the Executive Committee of UEH Labour Union and all contestants. UEH managers, academic staff and students also attended to support and cheer the performances.

Speaking at the opening of the ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Thien Duy - President of UEH Labour Union shared: "UEH EngKara Idol 2023" is the 3rd contest organized by UEH Labour Union, the first one in 2014, the second one in 2018. This year, the contest is designed with the combination challenge of music and English in order to encourage the love of learning foreign languages via music among UEHers. This is a useful cultural activity that provides UEHers with opportunity to interact and relax after a period of professional activities. At the same time, the program is to enhance UEHers’ solidarity and collaboration towards the new period of UEH Multidisciplinary and Sustainable University."

In order to select the best performances, the Organizing Committee invited the Jury Council of experts in the field of music and English, including Musician Truong Quang Tuyen - Vietnam Musicians Association, Musician Tran Anh Thanh Son - Deputy Head of UEH Administration Office, Vietnam Musicians Association; Dr. Bui Quang Viet - Director of UEH Dormitory Management Board (First Prize in Economics Student Solo 1998, Gold Medal of City Student Singing Contest; Silver Medal of National Student Singing Contest 1998); MSc. Bui My Ngoc – Vice Dean of UEH Faculty of Foreign Languages; Mr. Joseph G. Chabak – English teacher (studied dramatic arts and musical theater at HB studios in New York City).

With careful preparation and investment in their voices, costumes and performance style, the contestants had explosive moments and shined with all their might, immersing the whole auditorium in a musical night of classical, semi-classical and modern styles.
