Recently, the Faculty of Mathematics – Statistics, School of Economics, Law and State Management at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), had the honor of welcoming a delegation of experts from the Global Actuarial Initiative (GAIN) – a global initiative jointly implemented by UNDP and Milliman. The project aims to enhance actuarial capacity in developing countries, including Vietnam.
This visit marks the next step in the journey of collaboration with UEH in training and developing actuarial human resources, particularly students of the Risk Analysis and Actuarial Program. The event was attended by three international experts: Ms. Lea Obradović (Pricing Actuary, Verti Insurance), Ms. Victoria Vuyeqaba (Actuary, GAIN – Milliman), and Ms. Kiki Wang, Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and Vice President of Risk and Analytics Operations at Upland Capital Group. On UEH’s side, participants included Dr. Trần Thị Tuấn Anh – Vice Rector of the UEH College of Economics, Law and Government; Dr. Trần Minh Hoàng – Lecturer at the UEH Honours College; MSc. Bùi Thị Lệ Thủy – Director of the Risk Analysis and Actuarial Program, along with lecturers from the Department of Mathematics – Statistics and students of the program.
To begin the program, the delegation of experts had a meeting and discussion with the teaching staff of the Risk Analysis and Actuarial Program to review the achievements gained through GAIN’s recent support initiatives, and to explore more in-depth directions for future cooperation.
The experts engaged in discussions with UEH faculty members.
Immediately following the meeting, the academic competition “GAIN University Case Competition” officially took place, attracting six student teams to compete. The case tasked the teams with assuming the role of an actuarial consulting firm commissioned by NEW·WORLD – a multinational insurance corporation operating in Ambernϊa – to design a parametric insurance product aimed at mitigating the economic losses caused by global health risks in both Ambernϊa and its neighboring country, Palȍmϊnϊa.

The participating teams demonstrated strong professional knowledge, sharp critical thinking skills, and effective teamwork. The panel of judges — Ms. Lea Obradović, Ms. Victoria Vuyeqaba, Ms. Kiki Wang, Dr. Trần Thị Tuấn Anh, and Dr. Trần Minh Hoàng — acknowledged the students’ intellectual curiosity, analytical efforts, and creativity through in-depth feedback following each presentation.
The presentations delivered by the competing teams
At the conclusion of the competition, the team “Thám tử nhí” (Young Detectives), comprising five members — Nguyễn Trần Thành Long (ASP001 Cohort 49), Đoàn Phạm Anh Thư (AS001 Cohort 48), Lê Phương Anh (AS001 Cohort 48), Nguyễn Thị Hằng Nga (AS001 Cohort 48), and Nguyễn Việt Khoa (AS0001 Cohort 50) — was awarded first prize for their outstanding performance. The second and third prizes were awarded to teams Titans and [PoM] Penguins of Madagascar, respectively.
Honoring the Award-Winning Teams
The program not only enriched students’ practical academic experience, but also highlighted the strong and constructive partnership between UEH and international organizations that are actively contributing to the advancement of the insurance sector in Vietnam. The ongoing support from GAIN serves as a valuable resource in nurturing a new generation of actuarial professionals — individuals who are not only technically proficient but also globally minded and well-prepared to address the mounting challenges of the insurance market in an era marked by climate change and increasing natural disaster risks.
