Workshop on “Personal Data Protection in Teaching and Research – From Regulations to Action”: Promoting Awareness and Practice in the Context of Digital Transformation in Education

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tien Khai shared perspectives on the practical requirements of personal data protection within higher education institutions and provided updates on recently issued policies and regulations aimed at strengthening data governance mechanisms under the evolving legal framework. As one of the pioneering universities in promoting digital transformation across education, research, and university governance, UEH has proactively adapted to the new regulatory environment by establishing the Personal Data Protection Committee. The Committee is responsible for advising on, reviewing, developing, and implementing internal regulations related to personal data protection, information security, and data processing procedures in teaching, research, and operational activities. He also highlighted several challenges encountered during the implementation and operation of these initiatives.

During the workshop, Mr. Le Tran Quoc Cong, M.L., Lecturer at the Faculty of International Law, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, presented the topic “Personal Data Protection in Teaching and Research – From Regulations to Action.” His presentation focused on legal frameworks, implementation risks, and analyses of practical situations arising in teaching and research activities. He also shared important considerations to help faculty members and staff improve their ability to identify and address issues related to personal data protection in academic environments.

In addition to the keynote presentation, the workshop included an open discussion session between the speaker and participants, creating a valuable platform for connecting regulatory requirements with practical implementation. Real-life cases shared from teaching and research activities helped clarify current challenges as well as appropriate approaches in the increasingly digitalized educational landscape.

In his closing remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phong Nguyen, Principal of COB, emphasized the growing importance of personal data protection as higher education institutions continue to advance digital transformation. He reaffirmed the urgent need to build a safe, responsible, and legally compliant academic environment in alignment with the directives of relevant functional units. He encouraged all faculty members to thoroughly study UEH’s regulations, strengthen their compliance awareness, and exercise caution when collecting, storing, using, and sharing the personal data of learners, research participants, and other stakeholders. He also stressed the importance of proactively updating knowledge of relevant regulations and adhering to guidance issued by responsible units to ensure that teaching and research activities are conducted safely, responsibly, and in accordance with UEH’s strategic orientation.

Through this workshop, UEH reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an innovative, responsible, and sustainable educational environment, where strengthening data governance capabilities and raising awareness of personal data protection play a crucial role in adapting to digital transformation trends and advancing higher education development in the new era.
