A Journey of Musical Storytelling: Broadway at UEH

The workshop and showcase “BROADWAY IN VIETNAM: The Art of Musical Storytelling” recently took place with great enthusiasm at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), attracting over 600 students. The event provided an opportunity for UEH learners to explore the art of Broadway musical theatre while honing their language skills and expressing themselves through direct on-stage interactive activities.

The program began with in-depth sessions on vocals, choreography, stage presence, and the art of musical storytelling—the core elements that form the unique "language" of Broadway. This was followed by a live, high-energy showcase featuring vibrant performances that created an emotional experience for the audience.

As one of the regular activities of the UEH English Zone, the program helped participants practice their English skills, develop their artistic thinking, and discover a passion for musical theatre. This was achieved through classic works and excerpts from the musical “Once On This Island,” which revolves around themes of humanity, family, and nature, conveying messages of healing, hope, and a positive future.

The event kicked off with a famous excerpt from “The Phantom of the Opera,” setting the stage for a truly Broadway-esque program. This was followed by a performance of "Under the Sea" from “The Little Mermaid,” which, with the help of instructor Timmy, transported the audience to a dreamy underwater world. Soon after, the lively melody of “Friend Like Me” from “Aladdin” ignited the hall with its fast tempo and positive Disney energy, concluding a colorful and emotional opening.

UEH students had the opportunity to enjoy classic performances, from fairytale to modern.

Led by host Uy Le and featuring multisensory performances by the talented musical theatre actors of Impact Theatre Saigon, the program guided attendees into the enchanting world of “Once On This Tisland.” “Waiting for Life” was the first piece, followed by “Human Heart,” where voices blended in harmony with the sounds of nature, making Hall A116 feel like a true Broadway stage.

A special interactive segment followed, where the artists from Impact Theatre Saigon guided students in singing harmony for the song “Mama Will Provide.” Participants experienced how layers of harmony stack on top of each other to create a sound that evokes nature and resonates with everyone.

Furthermore, students had the chance to step onto the stage for a hands-on experience, gaining a deeper understanding of Broadway musical theatre through the choreography of the song “We Dance.”

The program concluded with a spectacular finale—a performance of the smash hit “Let It Go” from the musical Frozen. With the emotional vocals of UEHers, the musical’s iconic moments were brought to life through breathtaking performances.

The blend of professional performing arts and the enthusiastic participation of students transformed the event into a comprehensive academic and artistic playground. This contributed to enhancing creative thinking, emotional expression skills, and English language proficiency, while spreading positivity and inspiration for life and learning to the UEH learner community.

Through such multisensory, creative, and integrative experiential activities, UEH continues to affirm its commitment to building a holistic learning environment for its learners, where knowledge, skills, and inspiration are nurtured in an open, globally connected space.
