Communicating in today’s globalised world through Identity Understanding, Prejudice Minimization, and Tolerance

When the world is increasingly globalized, English communication skills are considered one of the necessary skills for people to integrate and develop. Of course, many people can communicate, but how many communicate effectively interculturally? This requires the flexible use of grammar, a variety of vocabulary, and a way to express one's thinking and ingenuity. Effective communication can help you achieve your goals quickly and make a good impression on your audience.

For many English learners, communication skills only stop at the level of "listening-understanding" and responding,"  but the truth is that this skill is much more complicated. Surely everyone has emailed teachers as students with different purposes. So, how do you choose words to suit the context and intonation and not offend the reader? This requires the communicator to have a solid foundation.

In addition, communicating effectively is even more challenging in a globalised world with hundreds of countries and thousands of cultures. With the rapid integration speed of Vietnam, students are now under more pressure when they have to work with and interact with many different cultures. Intercultural communication skills are extremely necessary.

Understanding that importance, on March 23, 2023, UEH English Zone and the School of Foreign Languages brought a language workshop with the topic "Communicating in today's globalised world" in the framework of periodic activities at English Zone with the participation of Dr Ton Nu Tuy Anh, PhD in linguistics at Macquarie University, Australia.

Dr Ton Nu Tuy Anh, attending the Language Workshop at UEH English Zone for the first time, shared many valuable experiences with students, allowing the attendees to have a more serious and complete view of how to communicate effectively across cultures.

To that end, Dr Tuy Anh provided the students with six tips: the first is "Understanding your identity" so that they do not misunderstand the meaning of the conversation; the second is "Aware of cultural differences and reduces prejudice"; "Tolerance and Less Judgment"; the fourth is "Enriching language tools and knowledge of social norms of different cultures" - understanding the other's culture to integrate with them; "Autonomy in intercultural learning".

The speaker analyses each question in detail, as well as methods to help learners apply in real-life conversations.

The workshop was successfully held and received much attention from the English community at UEH. The meeting occurred in hybrid with a joyful atmosphere full of the participants' learning spirit and active contributions. With the topic of March: “Communicating in today's globalised world”, the workshop clarified methods to help communicate effectively using English in real-life contexts. In addition, the workshop addressed the attendees' questions and concerns about using English when practising one of the most important skills. Besides that, attendees can send questions directly to the speakers at the program or online through the fan page UEH English Zone via a direct online combination. This form has helped increase connections and expand opportunities to learn and improve English in the UEH community.

You can view a recording of the workshop here.
