“Developing and Applying Case Studies to Teaching” Training Conference

On May 23rd - 26th, 2022, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) hosted the “Developing and Applying Case Studies to Teaching” Training Conference within the framework of the project JEUL - Erasmus Plus with the instruction and moderation of Professor Desmond Doran (University of Kent, England). This was an opportunity to advance the quality of teaching activities and promote the use of case studies of corporates in curricula.

Attending the training conference, on behalf of UEH, there were Assoc. Prof. Bui Thanh Trang - Deputy Head of UEH College of Business, Dr. Hoang Hai Yen - Dean at School of Banking, Moderator of JEUL - Erasmus Plus, Ms. Dang My Dung - Secretary of the Erasmus Plus project, and 25 lecturers from the UEH-affiliated schools.

Representing Banking University Ho Chi Minh City (BUH) were Master Luong Thi Thuy Thuy - Director of the International School of Business, Mr. Le Trung Nhan - Deputy Director of International School of Business and lecturers from UEH-member schools based in China and Europe that attend online.

The overview of the conference

Remarking on the opening of the training conference, Assoc. Prof. Bui Thanh Trang shared: “UEH is honored to be one of the partners of the competence advancing project JEUL - Erasmus Plus. The project is held intentionally to upgrade the quality of higher education and the effectiveness of curricula to prepare students for the global labor market. Following the success of the training conference on applying case study simulation in teaching organized in 2018, today, UEH is pleased to be the host and to welcome Professor Desmond Doran and lecturers of member schools in Vietnam, and member schools in China and Europe via the hybrid format. UEH hopes that thanks to this training conference, the school will focus more on the practicality and global and integration characteristics of curricula that help students to study more effectively, form the mind of innovation and creation, and train other skills during their learning process at UEH.”

Being back to UEH University after the first time to host the training on case study teaching methodology, Professor Desmond Doran excitingly shared: “I am truly honored to exchange and work at UEH and share my experience after a long time Covid-19 pandemic. This time at UEH, I see many changes which are brighter and more modern to respond to the demand for innovation and promotion of the quality of teaching and scientific research activities.”

Due to this training conference, participating lecturers approached more intensively the case study teaching methodology in addition to other teaching methodologies from traditional to modern ones. Professor Desmond Doran presented methodologies to design modern and engaging case studies for learners. The upside of this methodology is to assist students to memorize more proficiently, developing their critical thinking, upgrading their approaches to reality, and therefore, expanding their adaptability to their future careers.

The online training within the framework of the program

The JEUL project aimed to connect the education world to the world of work by empowering the team of lecturers with attractive tools for corporates involving developing the curricula as well as equipping the project offices of universities to attach students to the labor market.

At UEH, the project is sponsored partially the construction of UEH Simulation Center, applying the advanced teaching model in terms of bridging the gap between theories and reality as well as helping students with adapting better to the technology environment in the field of Banking - Finance - Security. UEH is currently making efforts to cooperate with European partner universities within the framework of the JEUL project to conduct teaching, scientific research, lecturer and student exchange and so on.
