On August 26, 2024, the School of Banking at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) hosted the seminar "Paving the Path to a Greener Future: EU Strategies for Sustainable Growth and Resilience." The event was part of the Sustainable Research Seminar (SRS) series—a scientific forum for exchanging advanced research and practical insights on sustainable development.

In the context of globalization and escalating environmental challenges, sustainable development, green innovation, and climate governance have become critical and urgent issues. Sustainable development is not merely an economic goal; it requires a balance between economic growth, environmental protection, and social equity. Green innovation, a core component of sustainability, focuses on using eco-friendly technologies and production processes to minimize negative impacts on the planet. Meanwhile, climate governance is key to addressing climate change and its severe consequences through effective policies and strategies.

To promote knowledge and awareness of these global issues, the School of Banking at UEH organized this seminar. The event was honored to feature keynote speaker Assoc. Prof. Dr. Xihui Haviour Chen, a leading expert in climate governance, green innovation, and sustainability from Keele Business School, Keele University, United Kingdom.

An overview of the seminar.

In her presentation, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Xihui Haviour Chen shared key strategies that the European Union (EU) has implemented to foster sustainable growth and enhance resilience to climate change. Dr. Chen highlighted the role of policies supporting green innovation, including the development of renewable energy, improvements in energy efficiency, and the promotion of a circular economy. Through case studies from EU member states, the speaker drew valuable lessons on climate governance and proposed effective response strategies for developing nations like Vietnam.

Dr. Chen also introduced new research trends in the field and emphasized the importance of international cooperation, particularly between the EU and Vietnam, in implementing joint projects on environmental protection and sustainable development. Her recommendations for Vietnam included building a clear policy framework, promoting research and development of green technologies, and encouraging corporate engagement in environmental protection.

The seminar drew significant interest from scholars, PhD candidates, and students from UEH and other universities. Numerous engaging questions were raised during the discussion session, centering on topics such as the feasibility of applying EU policies in Vietnam, the role of businesses in driving green innovation, and how developing countries can learn from the successes and failures of advanced nations in climate governance. Notably, scholars discussed how to design highly applicable training and research programs to meet future labor market demands.

The "Paving the Path to a Greener Future" seminar not only delivered valuable insights into sustainable development and climate governance from an EU perspective but also inspired new research questions and offered practical policy recommendations for Vietnam. It was an enriching event that not only raised awareness of the importance of sustainable development but also promised more engaging seminars in the future, contributing to the broader development of the scientific community and society.
