UEH Vinh Long's 5th Anniversary Ceremony - Officially transformed into UEH Mekong "For a sustainable Mekong"

On January 3, 2025, the 5th Anniversary Ceremony (December 4, 2019 - December 4, 2024) of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City Branch in Vinh Long (UEH Vinh Long) with the theme "Journey for a sustainable Mekong" was solemnly held in Vinh Long Province. This was also the official milestone of UEH Vinh Long's transformation with a larger stature and scale - UEH Mekong for a sustainable Mekong.

The 5th anniversary of the establishment of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City Branch in Vinh Long Province took place at 1B Nguyen Trung Truc, Ward 8, Vinh Long, with the participation of more than 500 delegates and guests from the Central Ministries, Departments and Divisions to the locality.

In particular, the ceremony had the presence of Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc - Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Deputy Minister of Education and Training; People's Teacher, Dr. Dang Huynh Mai - Former Deputy Minister of Education and Training; Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy - Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education; Dr. Hoang Bach Viet - Deputy Director of the Department of Organization and Personnel; Dr. Vu Thanh Binh - Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment.

On behalf of the Leaders, Former Leaders of the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee of Vinh Long Province, there was the presence of Dr. Bui Van Nghiem - Member of the Central Party Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of Vinh Long Province; Mr. Nguyen Minh Dung - Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Council; Dr. Nguyen Thi Quyen Thanh - Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee.

The presence of delegates from the provinces in the Mekong Delta region included Mr. Pham Minh Khoa - Deputy Head of the Organization Committee of Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee; Mr. Nguyen Quoc Cuong - Deputy Head of the Organization Committee of Kien Giang Provincial Party Committee; Mr. Kim Chi Hoa - Deputy Head of the Organization Committee of Tra Vinh Provincial Party Committee; along with the presence of leaders of departments - boards - divisions of Vinh Long and other provinces in the Mekong Delta region.
In addition, there was the presence of leaders, former leaders of the National Economics University (NEU), former leaders of Vinh Long College of Economics and Finance - the predecessor of UEH Vinh Long.

Along with that is the presence of the Board of Management of UEH, the Board of Directors of Vinh Long Campus, the Board of Management of UEH Member Colleges, leaders of units under UEH, and 109 officials, staff and employees of Vinh Long Campus.

Overview of the anniversary of UEH Vinh Long

The 5-year journey has affirmed UEH's mission in the Mekong Delta with the support and the direction from Ministries, Departments and Divisions.

In his welcoming speech and reviewing the outstanding achievements of the past 5 years of UEH Vinh Long, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dong Phong - Party Committee Secretary, Chairman of the Council of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City - emphasized: "In line with the internationalization strategy, in 2019, UEH officially established a branch in Vinh Long to serve the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta through training high-quality human resources, conducting research and transferring science in the fields of economics, society, and environmental protection for economic development. The outstanding results that UEH Vinh Long has achieved in the past 5 years in all aspects of training, research, administration, operation and community connection not only reflect the efforts of the collective lecturers, staff and students but also demonstrate the valuable companionship and support from the leaders of the Party, Government, local authorities at all levels, and the business community. Currently, it can be affirmed that the establishment of UEH Vinh Long is the consensus between the leaders of Vinh Long province and UEH leaders in the spirit of the Development of Vinh Long and the entire Mekong Delta Region at present and in the future."

Evaluating the role of UEH Vinh Long, Dr. Bui Van Nghiem - Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of Vinh Long Province - asserted: “The establishment of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City Branch in Vinh Long Province at the end of 2019 marked an important point in the development of higher education in Vinh Long province and the region. Over the past 5 years, Vinh Long has obtained many remarkable achievements in training and developing high-quality human resources; research, development and policy consulting and criticism; organizing community activities contributing significantly to promoting the socio-economic development of Vinh Long province in particular and the Mekong Delta Region in general. Looking back on the past 5 years, UEH Vinh Long has truly become a prestigious training and research center in the locality. On this occasion, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the leaders of University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, lecturers, staff and students who have made great contributions to this positive impact."

He emphasized that in the context of Vinh Long province focusing on implementing strategic goals on developing high-quality human resources and preparing a solid foundation for the period 2025 - 2030, he hoped that UEH would accompany Vinh Long province, continue to be an important strategic partner, and contribute to making Vinh Long a bright spot in the Mekong Delta region.

Regarding the direction and orientation of UEH Vinh Long's activities in the upcoming period, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc - Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Deputy Minister of Education and Training - stated: "The establishment of UEH Vinh Long not only meets the need for training high-quality human resources for Vinh Long province and the Mekong Delta region. This proof of the right orientation and successful model in developing the leading role of large public universities in important areas. To continue promoting this strategic role, the development orientations and solutions that UEH Vinh Long needs to implement in the upcoming period are as follows: Firstly, it is necessary to continue to thoroughly grasp and deploy the orientation of solutions to implement policies according to Resolution No. 29-NQ/TW on fundamental and comprehensive innovation of education and training, and Resolution No. 45-NQ/TW on developing intellectuals, and the Prime Minister's directives. It is required to promote the strategic role in providing human resources for the sustainable development of Vinh Long Province and the Mekong Delta Region. Secondly, UEH Vinh Long needs building and implementing plans to develop into a research center providing innovative solutions for Vinh Long Province and the Mekong Delta region. Thirdly, the policies to support learners have to be maintained well, including reducing tuition fees, increasing scholarship opportunities, implementing study loans with preferential interest rates to support students to complete their programz without worrying about finances;. creating opportunities for all learners to access a quality university education environment. Fourthly, the leaders of Vinh Long Province need to pay attention, support and assist UEH Vinh Long in developing and meeting the standards of a regional university, connecting with large enterprises and corporations, building a dynamic and creative learning ecosystem and learning opportunities for people in the region, and conducting research to contribute to the development of an innovation and startup ecosystem in the region. Fifthly, digital transformation in education and administration needs to be promoted at Vinh Long Campus to create a smart university model. Sixthly, more international cooperation programs and regional integration will be organized”

With the orientations set by the Ministry of Education and Training and Vinh Long Province, on behalf of the UEH and UEH Vinh Long, Prof. Dr. Su Dinh Thanh - President of UEH - committed: “UEH will research and concretize the development orientations and solutions set by the Ministry of Education and Training and Vinh Long province. We do believe that, with the close direction of the Ministry of Education and Training, the support from the leaders of Vinh Long Province and the leaders of the provinces in the Mekong Delta Region, together with the spirit of solidarity and efforts of all staff, lecturers and students, UEH Vinh Long will develop strongly, achieve the set goals and contribute positively to the cause of education and sustainable development of the Mekong Delta region.”

Closing the first 5-year journey, opening the next meaningful journeys, UEH Vinh Long has officially transformed with the UEH Mekong brand to carry out the mission: Enhancing knowledge, training high-quality human resources, integrating and transferring globally; Pioneering innovation, creativity, serving the community for a prosperous Mekong Delta region; Promoting scientific research and applied research for a sustainable Mekong Delta and Mekong sub-region.

Remarking on the development strategy for the period 2025 - 2030 and the vision to 2045 of UEH Mekong, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Quang Hung - Vice President of UEH, Director of Vinh Long Campus - emphasized:

"UEH Vinh Long will start a new journey with a larger role and wider operating space, in other words, a UEH Mekong for a sustainable Mekong. To carry out this mission, UEH Mekong will synchronously deploy 05 specific action programs including:

First,Training and developing human resources based on diverse and multidisciplinary study programs, international standards, providing global knowledge and sustainable actions associated with the Mekong. Second, Scientific and applied research and consulting to increase the prosperity of society and Mekong, both at present and for the future. Third, Building and operating green spaces and campuses from the university environment to the surrounding space and world towards a green planet. Fourth, Researching, developing and applying governance and management systems in an optimal way, prioritizing sustainable actions. Fifth, Promoting the connection of state management agencies, businesses, experts, researchers and communities domestically and internationally to gain resources for sustainable actions.”
